America Party, the Party That Elon Musk Wants to Create to Compete with Democrats-Republicans
Jakarta, IDN Times - Renowned American billionaire, Elon Musk, threatened to form a new political party called "America Party" as a response to the proposed One Big Beautiful Bill Act by US President Donald Trump. The threat came after his debate with Trump regarding government spending in the regulation.
Musk said he will establish the America Party one day after Congress passed the proposed Trump bill. The bill proposes tax cuts, as well as reductions in funding for healthcare and food programs. The rule was criticized by Musk, as it is considered to significantly increase the national deficit.
Bos Tesla refers to Democrats and Republicans as UniParty because the government deficit has drastically increased under the administration and Congress controlled by both parties. Musk said that if the bill is passed, the Republican Party would not be different from the Democrats, who are often accused of being wasteful in national spending.
Musk claimed that the bill would increase the US debt ceiling to 5 trillion US dollars (equivalent to Rp80,973 trillion), from the current 36.1 trillion US dollars (equivalent to Rp584,572 trillion). The 54-year-old man stated that the proposed Trump bill would make the US bankrupt and destroy millions of jobs in the country.
1. What is America Party?
America Party is the name of a party initiated by Musk to compete with the two main American parties, the Republicans and Democrats. The party claims to represent the voices of 80 percent of American citizens who are in the middle of both political spectrums of the United States.
Reported Al Jazeera , the idea of the America Party was revealed by Musk since early June through his X account. The CEO of SpaceX and Tesla posted a poll asking his followers about establishing a new political party in the US that could represent the 80 percent of the country's population who are between Republicans and Democrats.
Although social media polls do not represent the broader public sentiment, Musk's post received responses from 5.6 million people, of which 80.4 percent answered "yes." Since then, Musk has repeatedly reposted the poll results and called them evidence that most Americans want a new party to be formed.
Although they may not represent all Americans, the results show a trend among voters. According to a Gallup poll in 2024, 43 percent of Americans identify as independent, 28 percent as Republican, and 28 percent as Democrat. This indicates more citizens identifying as independent than as Democrat or Republican.
2. Funding challenges to political support for establishing a new party
Campaign financing experts and political scientists say that the reason why there has been no third party that successfully challenged the U.S. two-party system, among other things, is because it is financially and legally difficult to establish a new party. In addition, voters and candidates are hesitant to join.
American political parties are regulated by laws. Regulations come not only from the Federal Election Commission (FEC), but also from the states.
Quoting CNN , The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2022, known as the McCain-Feingold Act, imposes strict limits on contributions to political parties. The current limit is just under 450,000 US dollars (equivalent to Rp7.2 billion), which is divided for various party purposes.
Former FEC chairman Lee Goodman said Musk will need thousands of donors to help fund his party. Goodman mentioned that a very wealthy individual cannot fund a new national political party, just as he would not start a business. This is due to federal contribution limits.
In addition, Alan Abramowitz, a professor of political science at Emory University, said the biggest challenge they face is convincing people to choose a third-party candidate in the election. This is because third-party candidates are seen as having no chance of winning the election.
Abramowitz added that the Democrats would not advance under the America Party due to their dislike of Musk. Meanwhile, the Republican Party is likely to remain more loyal to Trump than to Musk.
3. Musk should support an independent candidate through his super PAC
If forming a new political party is too difficult, Musk can still wield significant influence through a super political action committee (PAC). Musk can send unlimited funds, which the committee can then support independent candidates, thereby more easily obtaining votes.
Nevertheless, Thomas Gift, a political science professor at the UCL School of Public Policy in London, said that although forming a party may be done, winning a seat in Congress or the White House is an entirely different matter.
Paul Levinson, a professor of communication and media studies at Fordham University in New York, said that historically, third parties in the US have had a poor track record. He mentioned that Musk's America Party is likely not to achieve much.
