Atiba University, Oyo, one of the notable private ivory towers in Oyo State, has presented the second set of its Nursing Science graduates for induction by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).
The induction ceremony, which was held on Thursday for 35 graduating nursing students, drew dignitaries from the nursing profession, principal officers, parents, and members of the university community to witness the event.
The founder and President of the institution, Dr James Ojebode, in his remarks on the occasion, declared that the vision for which the university was established had been fulfilled and its mission remains on course.
He noted that the idea behind establishing the university was not merely to create another academic institution, but to build a beacon of hope, a citadel of excellence and a factory of leaders who will confront Nigeria’s challenges head-on with knowledge, skill, character, and faith.
Dr Ojebode stated that Atiba University spared no effort in ensuring that all its programmes, including Nursing, meet both national and global standards.
He said: “We invested in quality faculty, modern laboratories and simulation facilities, partnerships with accredited hospitals, and a curriculum that is not only science-based but also ethically grounded.”
The founder expressed his gratitude to parents and guardians for their contributions to the institution’s success story, describing them as reliable stakeholders of the university.
Speaking further, he reassured the graduating students that the university had imbued them with the required knowledge, innovation, leadership, empathy, and patriotism needed to serve humanity through the professional nursing skills acquired during their training.
Dr Ojebode also expressed appreciation to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria for its support towards the sustenance of the university, especially the Nursing programme.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Sunday Olawale Okeniyi, in his remarks, confirmed that the university exposes its Nursing undergraduates and other students in the Faculty of Health Sciences to rigorous training in clinical practice and health-related research.
He said the institution partners with renowned and accredited hospitals, especially in the South-West, to provide them with the professional nursing skills needed in the healthcare sector.
The Vice Chancellor listed some of the notable accredited healthcare training hospitals the university has partnered with, including Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso; Oluyoro Private Hospital, Ibadan; and Adeoyo General Hospital, Ibadan. Others include the Psychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, as well as the General Hospital in Oyo town.
Continuing, he stated that the university is deeply committed to mentorship, noting that the newly inducted graduates were guided throughout their academic journey by a team of highly dedicated and competent professionals. He encouraged them to continue to seek guidance from seasoned experts in the field.
Meanwhile, the guest speaker for the occasion, Dr Olufemi Yinyinola Makinde, addressing the 2025 Nursing Science inductees, delivered the induction lecture titled “Nursing Profession as Caregiver and Role Model.” She stated that the induction exercise is more than just a ceremonial rite of passage, it is a reaffirmation of a calling into the field and a step into a legacy built on compassion, courage, science, and the relentless pursuit of healing.
She affirmed that as caregiver professionals, nurses must understand that caregiving is a skilled, intellectual, evidence-based practice that requires blending clinical knowledge with emotional intelligence, and technical skill with empathetic presence.
In this regard, she stressed that every touch they offer must be guided by evidence, and every decision made must be rooted in knowledge.
“As role models, caregivers, scientists, advocates, leaders, administrators, managers, and change agents, ensure that you continue to study and advance the profession to greater heights—to be role models recognised not only in the field of nursing but in the wider healthcare industry within and outside the borders of Nigeria,” she concluded.
Also speaking, a former Director of Nursing Services in Oyo State confirmed that Atiba University commenced its academic programmes on a solid foundation, with adequate teaching and research facilities capable of producing quality nursing science graduates for Nigeria’s health sector.
According to him, the university has consistently produced reliable nursing graduates of whom the Nigerian economy can be proud.
He noted that the academic performance of Atiba University’s nursing students in the professional certification examinations has been highly commendable.
“I make bold to say that Atiba University is a blessing to Nigeria in terms of its productive nursing science graduates entering the health sector,” he declared.
In his remarks, the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr Alhassan Ndagi, expressed satisfaction with the consistent quality of the institution’s output since its inception. Represented by Hassan Abdullah, he stated that nursing is a calling to serve and commended the university for equipping its graduates with the knowledge and skills required to make a real difference in people’s lives.
“I urge you to abide by the core values of the nursing profession: integrity, respect, empathy, and experience. Uphold the highest ethical standards in all your interactions and decisions. Treat every individual you encounter with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances,” he said.
