Bandung Becomes the Most Congested City in Indonesia, ITB Experts Highlight Lack of Public Transportation Alternatives

PR JABAR - Bandung City now holds the title of the most congested city in Indonesia, surpassing Jakarta since 2019 according to the TomTom Traffic Index report. According to transportation expert from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Sony Sulaksono Wibowo, this condition is considered normal considering the lack of viable public transportation alternatives for Bandung residents.
No Transportation Options, Bandung Residents Trapped in Traffic
Sony explained that traffic congestion in Bandung has become severe due to the lack of reliable and integrated public transportation. Unlike Jakarta, which has various alternatives such as MRT, LRT, TransJakarta, and commuter trains that are interconnected, people in Bandung only rely on private vehicles.
"Warga Bandung don't have any other choice. Because there's no sufficient public transportation, eventually everyone depends on motorcycles and private cars. That's why traffic jams become a daily routine," said Sony.
Minimal Transport Infrastructure and Inconsistent Policies
This situation is exacerbated by the weak commitment of local governments in building and developing public transportation systems. Sony pointed out that the city government of Bandung has not had a sustainable transportation plan so far. Every change in leadership brings programs that are not interconnected, and even tend to be disconnected.
"Jakarta can consistently develop public transportation because it has a long-term plan that is implemented regardless of who the governor is. In Bandung, each mayor comes with their own individual plans without continuity," he emphasized.
Sony also lamented the stagnation of city transportation routes (angkot) in Bandung, which have not undergone significant changes since the 1980s. When the government tried to reform the routes, it often failed due to opposition from angkot drivers.
Neglected Route Inequalities and Opportunities
Another issue, according to Sony, is the uneven distribution of minibus routes. Most routes are concentrated in the central and southern parts of the city, while the eastern part of Bandung, which has a large population, is almost untouched by public transportation.
"There are only a few routes in the eastern part of Bandung. However, the area is developing rapidly and has a large population. This shows the lack of spatial planning in the transportation system," he said.
Fading Hopes in the New Leadership
At the beginning of Mayor M. Farhan and Vice Mayor Dedi Mulyadi's leadership, Sony had hoped for significant changes in the public transportation system. However, over time, these hopes began to fade and ended up just as discussions.
"I was once quite optimistic. But if by the end of the year there are still no concrete steps, it will just be an empty promise," he said.
Need for Concrete Steps and Innovative Environmentally Friendly Transportation
For transportation observers, it is assessed that Bandung needs to immediately improve its transportation system with concrete steps. One of them is the development of safe bicycle paths, comfortable sidewalks for pedestrians, as well as integrated and affordable mass transportation modes.
The use of electric transportation and the digitalization of public transport systems also represents a future solution that should be explored. Bandung, as a city of students and a major tourist destination in West Java, has great potential if its mobility management is carried out professionally and systematically.
Without concrete steps, traffic congestion in Bandung is predicted to worsen and have negative impacts on the economy, environment, and the quality of life of the community.
