Best for you - BMKG Early Warning: Be Alert, Strong Winds Could Affect NTT Areas Until July 10, 2025

This early warning from BMKG was issued on July 4th.

Not only East Nusa Tenggara, but also some regions in Indonesia have received the same warning.

Meanwhile, the areas that also received a BMKG early warning for strong winds during the period of 4-10 July 2025 are Riau Islands, Banten, West Java, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, West Papua, and South Papua for the period of 4-6 July 2025, and Riau Islands, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta Special Region, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua, and South Papua for the period of 7-1 July 2025.

Here is the complete weather forecast information until July 10, 2025.

Based on BMKG analysis, as of the end of June 2025, it was recorded that 30 percent of Indonesia's seasonal zones have entered the dry season period.

This number only reaches half of the number of dry season zones that should theoretically experience a dry season by late June. This condition is caused by higher than normal rainfall in the ten-day period (Above Normal).

This above-normal rainfall anomaly in the ten-day period has been observed since early May 2025 and is still ongoing until now.

By the end of June 2025, heavy rainfall occurred in about 53% of Indonesia's territory, mainly in the regions of Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, parts of Kalimantan, parts of Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

Nevertheless, heavy to very heavy rain still occurred in several regions of Indonesia in the last week.

On July 2, 2025, BMKG recorded extreme rainfall at Deli Serdang Geophysical Station (142 mm) and Rendani Meteorological Station, West Papua (103 mm). This condition was triggered by active atmospheric dynamics, although the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) was in phase 2 (Indian Ocean), which generally is less supportive of rain cloud formation.

Several factors that contribute to the formation of intense rain clouds in the Indonesian region are the weak Australian Monsoon, which causes the atmospheric conditions in most of southern Indonesia still humid, and the presence of intra-seasonal atmospheric activities, namely MJO and Equatorial Waves.

Spatially, the MJO disturbance is still detected in eastern Indonesia, namely in South Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, which is driving the growth of rain clouds.

Equatorial waves such as Equatorial Rossby waves, Kelvin waves, and Low Frequency waves also strengthen the convection process, especially in Eastern Sumatra, Northern Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and some areas in southern Java. High air humidity and warm sea surface temperatures further support the process of rain cloud formation in various regions.

With the still very dynamic atmospheric conditions, BMKG urges the community and relevant parties to remain alert to the potential of extreme weather such as heavy rain accompanied by lightning or thunder, strong winds, and high waves in Indonesian waters.

This alert is important, especially in areas still vulnerable to extreme weather events, although some parts of Indonesia have entered the dry season.

Atmospheric Dynamics One Week Ahead

In the coming week, the Indonesian region, especially the southern and eastern parts, is expected to experience significant cloud development.

The potential for rain cloud formation in the Indonesian region is still quite high. One factor is influenced by the Australian Monsoon, which is indicated to be weak.

This causes the atmospheric conditions in most areas of southern Indonesia to still be humid.

In some areas with strong atmospheric instability due to surface heating, the formation of rain clouds can occur.

In addition, other tropical atmospheric wave activities still dominate.

Active equatorial Rossby waves in the western Indian Ocean, while Kelvin waves are expected to trigger rainfall cloud development in the regions of Lampung, Sunda Strait, Banten, Java Sea, southern coast of Kalimantan, and northern coast of Java.

In addition, persistent low-frequency waves are also monitored as active in a wide area, starting from Java, South Kalimantan, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, to Papua and the Arafura Sea, supporting increased convection and rain cloud development.

On the other hand, the tropical cyclone seed 98W is still around Luzon Island and does not have a direct impact on the Indonesian region, but this system causes an increase in wind speed (low level jet) in the South China Sea and northern Philippines.

Meanwhile, the cyclonic circulation in the western Indian Ocean near Sumatra and the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea formed convergence and confluence zones in several areas, including the Java Sea, Flores Sea, Central and Southeast Sulawesi, and northern Maluku, which also increased the chances of moderate to heavy rain.

Wind speed increases above 25 knots were also observed in several water areas such as the Andaman Sea, southern West Java, the South China Sea, and southern Papua New Guinea, thus potentially causing high waves, especially in the open sea areas exposed to strong winds.

On the mainland, local instability is strongly observed in several regions such as Lampung, Banten, Java, Bali, NTB, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua, supporting the formation of intense convective clouds. With these still active and complex atmospheric conditions, the community is advised to remain alert to the potential of extreme weather such as heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and high waves in the coming days.
