Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as more than just a leader, calling him a mentor, pillar, and father figure whose unwavering support shaped his years in public service.
In a heartfelt tribute on Monday, Mohammed said the death of the former president was not only a national loss but a deeply personal one, marking the end of a cherished relationship that spanned both official duty and personal camaraderie.
'The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari is a deeply personal loss for me,' Lai Mohammed said adding that 'With his passing, I have lost not just a leader and a boss but a mentor, pillar of support and father figure.'
He described the late president as a rare patriot, a man of firm conviction and unquestionable integrity, who embodied humility, honesty, and selflessness throughout his life.
According to him, while many have rightly described the late Nigerian leader as a rare patriot and an incorruptible leader in various their tributes, the former minister the deceased was more than those attributes.
'But beyond those noble attributes, President Buhari was a true humanist, a man who constantly prioritized empathy, compassion and the well-being of others in all his actions.
He was a man of unwavering faith and character, an incorruptible leader, a humble statesman and the very epitome of honesty', he stated.
Reflecting on his time as the spokesman for the Buhari administration, Mohammed said the former president frequently inquired about his welfare, despite bearing a heavier national burden.
'Throughout the nearly eight years that I served as the spokesman for his government, he always asked after my well-being and how I was coping with the demands of the job. On one occasion, he publicly remarked, 'I pity Lai Mohammed,'' he recalled.
He noted that the bond they shared was built on trust and deep mutual respect.
According to him, Buhari's confidence in him remained unshaken, even during the most challenging periods of his assignment.
'In his eyes, I could do no wrong, and that unwavering support meant the world to me,' he noted.
Alhaji Lai further revealed that their relationship continued after their time in government, adding that he maintained contact with the former president and made regular visits to Daura, including a three-night stay with him.
'Our final meeting was in Kaduna during the last Ramadan. Though I was informed he normally didn't receive visitors on that particular day, he still made time for me. We spent many hours together, just the two of us. Little did I know it would be our last meeting on this side of the great divide', he said.
He disclosed that he kept close tabs on Buhari's health when he was flown to London for treatment, and constantly offered prayers for his recovery.
Mohammed described his association with the late leader as a rare privilege, saying it was an honour to have worked so closely with a man of such discipline and humanity.
'I pray that Almighty God will forgive all his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. May He also comfort his family and all Nigerians who mourn the loss of this remarkable man', he prayed.
