Children win millions in SystemSpecs tech essay contest
Children across Nigeria have won cash prizes worth millions of naira in this year’s SystemSpecs Children’s Day Essay Competition, a flagship initiative aimed at nurturing young tech talents.
The tech competition, now in its sixth year, attracted over 5,000 entries from children aged nine to 16, marking a 33 per cent rise in participation compared to 2024.
In a statement on Friday, Chairman of SystemSpecs Holdings Limited, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, said the event was about more than just talent, stressing that it also celebrated courage, resilience, and innovative thinking among young Nigerians.
“What we celebrate today is not just talent but courage, the courage to speak up, think deeply, and believe in the power of innovation,” he said during the virtual awards ceremony held on June 27, 2025.
The junior category winner, Adeomi Adesewa, described the experience as “deeply transformational,” saying the competition taught her that her ideas could make a real difference.
“This competition showed me that what I write and imagine can truly matter. Even when I had to rewrite my essay many times, I never gave up. I now know that my words have power, and I want to use them to change my world,” she said.
In the senior category, Okeke Daniel, who emerged as the winner said the competition opened his eyes to the importance of acting boldly and consistently.
“CDEC made me realise that the future does not wait for us; we step into it. This award has taught me that when you are bold with your ideas and consistent with your efforts, doors will open. It has inspired me to aim higher and do more,” he said.
The competition has become a national platform for inspiring critical thinking and leadership among Nigerian children, according to Executive Director of Corporate Services at SystemSpecs, Bukola Adeboye.
“The goal of the CDEC has always been clear: to inspire, identify, and elevate the next generation of thinkers and problem solvers by promoting digital creativity, purposeful education, and structured engagement. Our dedication remains unwavering as we continue to equip and empower young Nigerian minds to thrive through innovation,” she said.
Winners in both the junior and senior categories received N1m each, alongside laptops, a one-year internet subscription, and other educational resources. Second- and third-place winners received N750,000 and N500,000, respectively, in addition to laptops.
In the schools’ category, Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, and Abesan Comprehensive Junior College, Lagos, emerged winners in the senior and junior divisions, respectively. Each of the winning schools received 10 laptops to support ICT learning.
Girls accounted for 61 per cent of all submissions this year, with some states recording female participation above 90 per cent. The competition also saw entries from orphanages and children with special needs, reflecting SystemSpecs’ commitment to inclusivity.
Managing Director of Remita Payment Services Limited, ‘DeRemi Atanda, said the initiative is helping to prepare Nigerian children for a future where technology will drive national progress.
“We see education not just as a tool, but as a launchpad for national transformation. CDEC is helping to build the intellectual and emotional capacity of young Nigerians to take ownership of the future,” he said.
Past participants such as child actress Darasimi Nadi, young software engineer Joshua Agoola, and machine learning developer Toluwase Shoniran also joined the event, offering real-life testimonies of how the competition had shaped their paths.
Twelve states recorded more than 100 per cent growth in entries compared to the previous year, with over 15 schools submitting 20 or more entries, signalling increased public and institutional support for the initiative.
SystemSpecs said it remains committed to using technology to empower Nigerian youths and help them reimagine the possibilities for the country’s future.
