Chronology of a Bandung Man Lost at Sayang Heulang Beach, Swept Away by Waves at the Edge of Rocks

Best for you , GARUT - A tourist from Bandung is reported to have been swept away by the sea current while walking along the shore of Sayang Heulang Beach, Pameungpeuk District, Garut Regency , West Java on Saturday (7/5/2025).

The victim is known as Maman Surahman (42), a resident of Kampung Pasir Panjang, Desa Cempaka Mulya, Kecamatan Cimaung, Kabupaten Bandung.

The incident occurred around 16:30 WIB when the victim was visiting the coastal tourist area with his family.

According to witness statements, the victim walked towards the rock jutting out into the sea even though he had been warned not to go too far into the middle. A sudden large wave dragged the victim's body out to the middle of the sea, and until now, the victim has not been found.

"Korban had been reminded not to go too far into the sea because big waves usually come suddenly. But he still walked towards the rocks. Not long after, a big wave came and immediately swept the victim away," said Zega (55), a witness who was fishing near the location at that time.

Zega, a resident of Asisor Village, Pameungpeuk, explained that the wave conditions at that time were quite dangerous. He personally witnessed how the victim's body was swept away by the current and gradually disappeared from the water's surface.

Besides Zega, two other people who witnessed the unfortunate event were the victim's wife, Oom (55), and a relative, Feri Rismawan (25), who also came from Cempaka Mulya Village, Cimaung. The three of them immediately reported the incident to the local authorities.

The Garut Regency Police Air and Air Force (Polairud) who received the report directly arrived at the crime scene (TKP), recorded statements from witnesses, and coordinated with the joint SAR team to search for the victim.

"We received a report on Saturday afternoon around 17:00 WIB and immediately went to the location. The initial actions we took were to record witness statements, document the incident site, and contact the SAR Team for search efforts," said Acting Head of the Marine Police Unit of Garut Regency Police, Aep Saprudin, on Sunday (6/7/2025).

The joint Tim SAR, consisting of Basarnas personnel, Polairud, BPBD, and local volunteers, has been deployed to search the coastal and sea areas around the location where the victim disappeared. As of Saturday night, the search continued but with no results so far.

Sayang Heulang Beach area is known as one of the favorite sea tourism destinations in southern Garut, but the waves in this area can be very dangerous, especially during the east wind season.

Many visitors are unaware of the potential dangers when being too close to the reef area or swimming without supervision.

According to information from local residents, warnings about large waves are often conveyed, but many tourists still ignore the safety advisories.

"Victim is not the first. In months like this, the ocean current is very strong. Many tourists don't know because it seems calm, but it can be dangerous," said Aep.

As of this news, the search for the victims is still ongoing. The joint SAR team will continue the search operation on Sunday morning, expanding the search area towards the west and east from the last seen location of the victim.

The victim's family is still waiting for news at the temporary search post set up near the coastal area. Police authorities have also urged the community and tourists to be more cautious when engaging in activities in the southern Garut coastal area, and always comply with safety signs and instructions from safety officers.

"We appeal to all visitors to always be alert to sea weather and follow the instructions of the staff or local residents. Don't force yourself into dangerous areas," added Aep.
