Best for you - Dedication to restore the heartbeat to a more regular rhythm and return the patient's life to normal is the breathing of service of Dr. dr Sumarni, SpJP, Subsp. Ar (K).
A female doctor born in Makassar on November 5, 1979, is known as one of the experts in cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmia in Eastern Indonesia.
Dr. Sumarni has traveled a long journey in the medical world.
I am specialized in cardiology and vascular diseases with a sub-specialization in electrophysiology, a field focused on the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.
Her dedication does not stop within the practice room.
She is actively teaching at the Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Hasanuddin University, as well as the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar.
In addition to practicing at RSUP Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo, Primaya Hospital, and Cardion Makassar Clinic, Dr. Sumarni actively enhances her competencies through various recent trainings.
Among them, the CPS Locator 3D Catheter Hands-on Experience and the Holter and Advance ECG Workshop that he attended in 2024.
His expertise has made him a member of various professional organizations, including the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) and the Indonesian Heart Rhythm Society (InaHRS).
Cardion Clinic
Cardion Makassar Clinic is the result of joint thinking between Dr. Sumarni and her husband, Dr. Wahyudi, SpBS (K), FICS, FINS, a functional neurosurgeon.
This clinic was born from their concern, as they often found patients having to move from one hospital to another in order to receive comprehensive treatment, especially in cases of arrhythmia and functional neurological disorders such as epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, and essential tremor.
"we realize it would be very beneficial if there was a comprehensive clinic capable of providing diagnostic and therapeutic services in these two fields, which are still rare in Makassar," said Dr. Sumarni.
At Cardion Clinic, patients not only receive consultation services, but also comprehensive supporting examinations such as electrocardiogram (EKG), Holter, treadmill test, echocardiography, up to neurocognitive evaluation.
More than just a clinic, Cardion Clinic is also expected to become an education center for the community.
"Hope our people come here not only when they are sick, but also when they want to learn about their own bodies," he said.
Throughout her career, Dr. Sumarni has handled various arrhythmia cases, from mild palpitations to life-threatening conditions.
One of the most joyful moments for him is when a patient, who had lived in uncertainty for years, finally regained their dreams after the catheter ablation procedure.
"Once I treated a young patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome who eventually could become an athlete, soldier, or police officer after ablation," he recalled.
However, behind the success, there are also episodes that are not easily forgotten.
When hours of ablation attempts fail to eliminate the arrhythmia, guilt arises.
"It touches the deepest part of us. Because in this profession, we are not only holding catheters and heart electrical maps. We also hold trust," he said.
For her, being an electrophysiologist is not just about technical expertise, but also about humility in accepting limitations, and the courage to be by the patient's side even when the results do not meet expectations.
Outside her profession, Dr. Sumarni is a wife and mother of seven children.
That role is a gift as well as a challenge.
"There are days when I feel left behind as a mother, not optimal as a wife, and always running behind as a doctor and lecturer," she said.
However, she learned to reconcile with imperfection.
"Kita tidak harus sempurna untuk bisa bermakna. Menjadi cukup bukan soal berapa banyak yang bisa diselesaikan, tapi seberapa besar ketulusan yang kita bawa dalam setiap peran," katanya.
Amidst a busy schedule, she still strives to be present with her heart, even in the simplest form: greeting patients, listening to children, or just being present at home, even if briefly.
Dr. Sumarni has big aspirations for Cardion.
She wants this clinic to develop into an education and referral center for arrhythmia and functional neurological disorders in Eastern Indonesia.
Even, one day, it became a specialized hospital known not only for the size of its facilities, but also for the benefits it provides.
"As long as there are patients coming with questions and leaving with hope, I know this dream is worth fighting for," he concluded.
