In response to that, Erick Thohir admitted he is open to the possibility that PT Liga Indonesia Baru, as the operator of the Indonesian league competition, wants to launch the Indonesia Cup. However, he reminded that there is one thing that should be a concern for many parties. Namely, the number of participants in Liga 1, which is 18 teams.
"Very welcome. But what I said is, in Indonesia there are 18 clubs in Liga 1. Can you tell me which countries in Southeast Asia have 18 clubs in their league? I think there aren't any. For example, Singapore has six. How many are there in Thailand? 16 teams," said Erick Thohir at The Langham, Jakarta, Monday (7/7).
In addition to the large number of teams, Indonesia's geographical conditions are also very vast. Therefore, it takes a long time for each team to travel from one city to another.
"The second one, geographically, it's 8 hours by airplane from end to end. Not 8 hours by car. We are an archipelago country. It means, there are many clubs, and the geography is also vast," he said.
Erick then highlighted the busy match schedule of the clubs, especially the top teams and also the champions of Liga 1. Because they can now get tickets to compete in Asian competitions.
Persib Bandung will represent Indonesia in the AFC Champions League II, while Dewa United FC will compete in the AFC Challenge League to defend the red and white flag in Asia.
The presence of the two tournaments is said to directly affect the preparation of the domestic calendar, in this case, the schedule of the Indonesia League 1. Especially if they participate in the ASEAN Club Championship, which AFF initially requested both teams to join.
"When this club plays on Friday, Saturday, Sunday. When it's filled in the middle, there's AFC, right? There is AFC now. There are three levels, not just one. Then now there's AFF (ASEAN Club Championship) in the middle," explained Erick.

"Such a thing," Erick emphasized that he remains open to the desires of many parties who want the Indonesia Cup to be revived again. But he stressed the importance of considering how important it is to adjust with the competition calendar and the readiness of all parties.
"So, the Indonesia Cup is okay if it can be included in the schedule. But as I mentioned earlier, I'm not afraid of being criticized, because I believe in the process," said the former president of Inter Milan.
"This is the same mindset that we both need to sit down and discuss. There's no right or wrong. I support the Indonesia Cup, but when is the schedule?" he concluded.
