Best for you , JAKARTA — Several countries continue to hold negotiations or negotiation with United States (AS) in the midst of news about the extension of the import tariff deadline set by President Donald Trump.
Citing Reuters on Monday (7/7/2025), Trump stated that his government is in the final stages of finalizing several trade agreements to be announced in the coming days.
The new tariff notice to trading partner countries will be delivered no later than July 9, with tariffs taking effect from August 1, 2025.
Although previously promising 90 agreements in 90 days, Trump and his team have only completed limited agreements with the UK and one unclear agreement with Vietnam. Meanwhile, an agreement with India remains unachieved.
Here is the progress of the U.S. trade negotiations with several partners ahead of the deadline:
European Union
U.S. officials claimed there has been progress in discussions with the European Union (EU) after the visit of the chief trade negotiator of the bloc, Maros Sefcovic, to Washington last week. However, European diplomats stated that no significant breakthrough had been achieved as of Friday.
One diplomat said the EU's regulations on social media and tech companies, which are stricter than in the US, cannot be negotiated. In addition, the US 17% tariffs on agricultural and food products have become a major obstacle.
According to a Bloomberg report, the EU is willing to accept a 10% universal tariff on many of its exports, but wants exemptions for the pharmaceutical, alcohol, semiconductor, and commercial aircraft sectors. The bloc also urges quotas and exemptions to lower US tariffs on cars, parts, steel, and aluminum.
Japan
Japan remains willing to reach a trade agreement while safeguarding national interests. Japanese negotiator Ryosei Akazawa held intensive telephone discussions with U.S. Trade Representative Howard Lutnick on Thursday and Saturday last week.
Trump previously accused Japan of being unwilling to import U.S. rice and called Japanese auto trade unfair. He also asked Tokyo to buy more U.S. oil. Trump said Japan might be a country that will receive a tariff notice, with potential tariffs as high as 35%.
India
Trade negotiations with India remain stalled due to differences in views regarding U.S. tariffs on automotive components, steel, and agricultural products. India currently faces a 26% tariff and has offered to reduce U.S. product tariffs, but has refused to open its agricultural and dairy markets.
New Delhi also submitted a countermeasure tariff to the World Trade Organization (WTO), stating that the 25% U.S. tariff on cars and parts could affect India's exports worth US$2.89 billion.
Indonesia
RI offers to cut tariffs on major imports from the US close to zero and commits to purchase $500 million worth of US wheat to avoid 32% tariffs. Garuda Indonesia Airlines also plans to buy more Boeing aircraft as part of a $3.4 billion cooperation package to be signed this week.
As a gesture of goodwill, the Indonesian government has relaxed import licensing for plastic products, chemicals, and industrial raw materials since June 30. Jakarta has also invited the US to invest together in state-owned enterprise mineral projects.
South Korea
Although there have been several negotiations and initial agreements, South Korea has requested an extension until July 9. National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac is scheduled to visit Washington from July 6-8 to discuss bilateral issues and the arrangement for the first meeting between President Lee Jae Myung and Trump.
South Korea almost does not impose tariffs on imports from the US thanks to the free trade agreement. The US focus now shifts to exchange rate issues and defense costs, particularly the burden sharing for the 28,500 US soldiers stationed in South Korea.
Thailand
Thailand is making a final effort to avoid the 36% tariff by offering greater market access for U.S. agricultural and industrial products, as well as commitments to purchase energy and Boeing aircraft.
Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira stated that this proposal includes reducing tariffs, increasing investment, and enforcement measures to avoid export violations.
Thailand is also committed to importing more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US and cutting tariffs on US corn imports.
Swiss
Switzerland is exploring concessions to avoid the 31% tariff, including providing greater market access for products such as seafood and citrus fruits. However, as a base for major pharmaceutical companies like Roche and Novartis, Switzerland also wants to ensure that the pharmaceutical sector is not subjected to U.S. tariffs in the future.
