Family planning team urges Yobe women to access free services
The Yobe State Family Planning Media Advocacy Team on Wednesday held a roundtable meeting to assess its performance, challenges, and chart the way forward on activities in the state.
The meeting took place at the Desert Multipurpose Hall, Sand Dunes Hotel, GRA, along Gujba/Maiduguri bypass, Damaturu.
At the meeting were representatives from The Challenge Initiative, DevComs, healthcare providers, and religious leaders who joined to discuss the state of family planning services in Yobe.
In his remarks, Mustapha Yusuf, Chairman of the Media Group and a staff with the Nigerian Television Authority, Damaturu, said the objective of the meeting was to review the group’s activities and address challenges for a way forward.
“We’re meeting today to look at our performance so far, review our challenges, and find proper solutions to move forward,” he said.
Yusuf, who emphasised the need for continued sensitisation, improved access, and religious support for child spacing, highlighted the group’s efforts in promoting reproductive health awareness since April 2024.
He added, “Through radio programs, community outreach, and special reports, journalists have played a key role in dispelling myths and encouraging family planning, particularly in rural areas.”
Yusuf Musa, the Chairman of the Yobe Family Planning Media Advocacy Team, noted, “We have recorded success stories where husbands and wives now openly discuss child spacing, a topic once misunderstood”
The group commended the Yobe State Government and partners like TCI and DevComs for providing essential resources, training, and logistics.
While noting the challenges faced by the group, the team stressed the problems associated with security risks in remote areas, inadequate training, and the vast distance of over 47,000 sq km that the group covers to take advocacy across the state, among others that make widespread advocacy difficult.
Hajiya Fatima Abba Jiddum, the Deputy Director and Reproductive Health Coordinator at the Yobe State Primary Health Care Management Board, confirmed that family planning services (both short-term and long-term methods) are free in government facilities.
“Before now, the acceptance of the service was very low, but now the majority of women in villages visit health centres to access family planning services,” she said.
The meeting featured interfaith discussions to address misconceptions and misinformation about child spacing in society.
Pastor Samaila Jarmaya Baba’a, a Christian clergy member, explained that while the Bible does not explicitly mandate family planning, it encourages responsible stewardship. Citing 1 Timothy chapter 5:8, he stressed that parents must care for their families’ physical and emotional well-being, which may involve planning family size.
Ustaz Suleiman Abubakar, tĥe Chief Imam of Bilal Masjid in Damaturu, pointed out that Islam permits child spacing for health and economic reasons, thus cautioning against having children without the means to support them.
Arewa PUNCH reports that as The Challenge Initiative program concludes in August 2025, the advocacy team plans to intensify engagement with traditional and religious leaders to further reduce misinformation.
The meeting ended with a call for sustained collaboration among media organisations, the government at all levels, and faith-based organisations to ensure every woman in Yobe can access family planning services freely, safely, and without stigma.
