There is no worktable, only the cold floor where they plan their future. Amidst this simplicity, Egi Mashita and Arifin Praditya take small steps that they never expected would grow into a source of livelihood for dozens of families. There is no big capital, no special connections. Only a strong intention and the courage to try something new.
Their journey began in 2017. At that time, Egi and Arifin were just two ordinary young men with a simple dream: to create their own products and prove that they could stand on their own feet. Equipped with curiosity and the drive to create, they started designing clothes, sewing, photographing products, and promoting them through social media. They sold their own produced shirts, backed by original design ideas and raw self-confidence.
However, enthusiasm alone is not enough. On the field, they immediately faced the reality that building a business is not just about intention. They experienced great difficulties in finding a tailor that can produce neat stitching at an affordable price. Many vendors set high prices, but the results did not meet expectations. Inconsistent quality made them lose time and money.
"At that time, finding a cheap tailor with good results was really hard. The sewing price was high, but the fabric was very thin," Arifin recalled.
They made a big decision, no longer relying on outsiders. They will manage the production process themselves, from cutting the fabric to sewing. Yet, none of them had a background in the fashion world or sewing skills. However, Egi was not intimidated. He started learning from scratch, watching tutorial videos, reading articles, and practicing repeatedly until his hands got used to holding scissors and creating patterns.
"I have learned a lot from my mistakes. Some clothes that have been produced are not comfortable to wear because the patterns were not right. But it was precisely from this that I learned to improve the stitching and patterns, and eventually I dared to market them myself," said Egi, who is also Arifin's wife and business partner.
Meanwhile, Arifin focused on developing designs and marketing. He managed the social media, built relationships with resellers, and even got involved in product distribution. They naturally divided roles, trusted each other, and supported one another. However, the journey was not always smooth. The COVID-19 pandemic, which hit since early 2020, became the biggest challenge.
The market suddenly stopped. People no longer bought clothes as usual. Many orders were canceled, inventory piled up, and morale began to fade. From this downturn came a new idea. They shifted from selling their own products to providing tailoring services for local brands. In the midst of the crisis, the demand for small, flexible tailoring services increased, and they took advantage of this opportunity.
With the spirit, a simple sewing machine, and the help of three tailors, they established Nifira Garment Industry (NGI). The name "Nifira" is not just a name. It is the opposite of the name Arifin, as a symbol of personal struggle and a reminder that this business started from zero, from a small rented room that was even not worthy to be called a workshop.
Since then, their efforts have developed rapidly. From just three people, NGI now employs more than 60 full-time employees. They produce thousands of pieces of clothing for dozens of local brands from various cities in Indonesia. The partner network is expanding, production capacity is increasing, and customer trust continues to grow.
However, beyond just business growth, NGI is built on a strong social spirit. Egi and Arifin have a vision that their business must bring maximum benefits to the surrounding community. "We want this business to be a blessing for many people, not just for ourselves," said Egi, who is both Arifin's wife and partner. A family-like atmosphere is the main value at NGI. Not only do employees work, but they are often invited to join activities together such as recreation, religious gatherings, and iftar.
Now, Nifira Garment is not just a clothing production place. It has become a symbol of the spirit of young people who dare to dream big, work hard, and refuse to give up. A business that was once built only to survive has now become a reliance for dozens of families.
"For us, this is not about success or wealth. It's about how our hard work can mean something for others," said Arifin.
The story of Egi and Arifin is not just a business story. It is a story about dreams slowly woven, about the courage to start despite limited resources, and about a partnership that grew not because of large capital, but because of a sincere intention to move forward together. They are not only entrepreneurs, but also bearers of hope. From a small rented room, Nifira Garment is now part of the local economic strength, showing that big changes can start from small steps. And behind the sewing machines that now hum every day, there are two young men who never stop growing and never get tired of giving meaning to their surroundings.
