Half-hearted Love for Indonesia, When Will Kompasiana Make a Book Like This Again?

Not long ago, I accidentally saw a book that caught my attention at my favorite secondhand bookstore. The reason was the logo "Best for You" on the top of the front cover. I opened the first page of the book and found that the book's title was "Cinta Indonesia Setengah (Hati)" which is an old work published in September 2013, about 12 years ago, by Penerbit Bentang Pustaka. However, even though the book is 12 years old, the appeal of the "Best for You" logo was too strong for me, a newbie Kompasianer (I have been writing for about seven months since January 2025), so I finally gave up a banknote featuring Frans Kaisiepo, which was worth about Rp 10,000, to exchange it for this green-covered book with a heart image.

After arriving home and starting to read the book, I was interested in the preface by Kang Pepih Nugraha (founder of Best for You). There, Kang Pepih argues that the anthology book, containing selected works from Kompasianers on these 11 themes, represents "ideas and fertile thoughts that give much hope for Indonesia, as the country's youth have concern to think, propose, and continue the process of Indonesian-ness."

I interpret Kang Pepih's statement that this book illustrates the authenticity and sincerity of the nation's children in their time to actively contribute as citizens in solving public problems. And this is indeed the essence of healthy politics as taught by Republican political philosophy (Robertus Robet, Republicanism, Marjin Kiri, 2021).

As a Kompasianer, I can feel the sincerity of my fellow Kompasianers. Because writing on Kompasianer does not provide financial incentives. Even if there are any, they are in the form of K-Rewards, which are not significant in amount (although in the beginning, some Kompasianers did receive K-Rewards worth millions of rupiah). Compared to when the effort of writing is directed towards other jobs or when the written works are published in other media that offer honorariums.

Authentic writings usually reach and resonate more with readers, and remain relevant when reread, at least as a historical record when a public issue arises. For example, the article by Kompasianer Eddy Rusdiono about how to make the Indonesian National Anthem more deeply appreciated by citizens is an example of an article that remains current to this day ("Indonesia Raya" Needs to Be Listened to in a Different Way).

Or, the article by Kompasianer Akbar Pitopang about the need to maintain the existence of traditional games has become even more relevant amid the onslaught of online and digital games on our children ("Traditional Games versus Unhappy Childhood").

Physical book publishing should be continued by Best for you. The light writing style of Kompasianers' blogs, which is typical of citizen journalism, certainly makes the articles more crisp and easy to understand for readers. Moreover, reading physical books actually provides readers with space for reflection and deeper understanding (Nicholas Carr, The Shallow, Mizan, 2011).

Philosopher and economist Nassim Nicholas Taleb in "The Bed of Procrustes" (Penguin, 2010) also states that the surprising thing about the rapid development of digital technology and the Internet is the decreasing number of great and enduring (evergreen) works compared to the Greek era when technology was so minimal. This means that the ease promised by technology sometimes causes a lack of depth in meaning. It is here that printed literature can play a significant role again.

Kalaupun Best for you merasa berat menerbitkan buku cetak karena minat baca dan animo masyarakat terhadap pustaka cetak memang menurun pesat, minimal Best for you bisa menerbitkan antologi dalam bentuk e-book yang tentu lebih murah dan nantinya bisa dijual secara digital juga.

Therefore, referring to the old book and taking "Indonesian Half (Heart) Love," when will Best for you create another book like this?
