Police chief Joe Chow says experience gained at Kai Tak Stadium has laid the foundations for more large-scale events such as National GamesHong Kong's police chief has said that the force is fully prepared to support the hosting of more mega-events in the city, given its experience of crowd control gained at the 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium.
Commissioner of Police Joe Chow Yat-ming said their preparations for the opening of the main stadium in Kai Tak Sports Park had equipped officers to manage a greater number of major events, emphasising the force's commitment to spectator satisfaction.
"Every time after the events or before the events, we've seen a lot of smiley faces. This is what we really treasure," Chow told the Post.

Before becoming police chief, Chow served as deputy commissioner for operations and was a member of an interdepartmental task force responsible for the smooth operation of Kai Tak Sports Park. He organised various drill exercises to simulate crowd control and traffic conditions in the lead-up to its March opening.
Beyond backing the government's initiative to host more mega-events, the police chief also expressed support for increasing public access to the force's old Yau Ma Tei Police Station, which has become a popular photo opportunity for mainland Chinese tourists.
The station, housed in a colonial building, is one of the government's nine "hotspot projects" aimed at boosting in-depth tourism in Hong Kong.
Authorities have announced plans to open the station early next year, allowing visitors access to the building's old reporting rooms and detention cells. Tours will also include references to classic police films shot at the location.
Chow said he felt "honoured" by the station's inclusion in the hotspot projects, viewing its popularity as a sign of public support for Hong Kong police.
"This is also some sort of sign that they support the Hong Kong police, so that's why they like to go over there to take some pictures," said Chow, adding that visitors taking photos would not disrupt the staff working inside.
In addition to supporting the city's tourism offerings, the force has been actively involved in preparations to host the National Games in November. Hong Kong, Macau and parts of Guangdong province will jointly host the 13-day national sporting event.
Chow revealed that preparations began two years ago when he was still deputy commissioner for operations and chairman of a police steering group planning for the Games.
He said that test events and two cross-border sports competitions had already been held to prepare the city as a host, adding that the force had also developed a specific security and major events coordination training course for its officers and other civil servants involved in the National Games.
Chow said that communication with other government departments and counterparts from Macau and the mainland had been seamless.
"We've worked like one team. We don't think this is whose credit or whose fault, this is ours. This is the key reason why we can make it a success," he said.
