HP Inc. and Google have partnered with UpSkill Universe to launch the Skills for Business programme; a new initiative aimed at providing free digital and business skills training to 10,000 small and medium-sized enterprises in Nigeria and South Africa.

The programme, announced via an email to The PUNCH, is designed to help entrepreneurs adapt to a rapidly changing digital economy by equipping them with practical tools to grow, scale, and succeed.

Participants will receive hands-on training in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital marketing, and e-commerce, alongside access to HP LIFE, the HP Foundation’s free global online business skills platform.

The Chief Executive Officer of UpSkill Universe, Gori Yahaya, said the collaboration is a response to the real challenges SMEs face in Africa.

“Entrepreneurs and business owners throughout Africa are already leading change within their communities. We understand the difficulties they face, from navigating complex business landscapes to adjusting to the prevalence of AI and evolving customer behaviour,” Yahaya said.

He added, “Through collaboration with HP Inc. and Google, we see an immense opportunity to empower businesses with the practical tips, tools, and technology they need to thrive.”

The Skills for Business programme builds on the success of the Hustle Academy Business Bootcamp, which has supported over 15,000 SMEs across Africa since 2022. This new initiative will focus on action-orientated learning, combining self-paced modules with expert-led virtual workshops delivered by Google and UpSkill Universe.

Modules include Unlock Growth with Practical Skills in AI, Digital Marketing Essentials, and Starting an E-commerce Journey. All content is accessible via mobile app, online, or offline in eight languages through HP LIFE.

The programme also prioritises inclusivity, with a target of at least 50 per cent participation from women-owned businesses.

Google Sub-Saharan Africa’s Head of B2B & Brand Marketing, Kristy Grant, said the initiative is part of a broader effort to support Africa’s small business sector.

“Small businesses are a driving force for progress across Africa and beyond. It’s more critical than ever to help them access the skills and tools they need to grow, especially as digital technologies transform business operations,” Grant said.

“We are proud to collaborate on initiatives like this that enable entrepreneurs to translate their ambitions into lasting positive impact for their communities and economies,” he added.

SMEs account for nearly 80 per cent of jobs in Africa but continue to face barriers in accessing the digital skills required to compete in the global marketplace. The new programme aims to bridge this gap by providing entrepreneurs with locally relevant training to meet today’s business demands.

Global Head of Social Impact at HP Inc. and Executive Director of the HP Foundation, Michele Malejki, said the partnership aligns with HP’s commitment to advancing digital equity.

“When small businesses thrive, entire communities thrive with them. The Skills for Business programme is about empowering entrepreneurs to access the future of work,” Malejki said.

He continued, “Since 2021, HP has been on a journey to accelerate digital equity for 150 million people by 2030 by providing access to technology and digital skills content that enhances economic opportunity. We are proud to support this impactful programme.”

By the end of 2025, the programme aims to directly train 10,000 SMEs and indirectly impact an additional 59,000 individuals, reinforcing the role of strategic partnerships in driving Africa’s digital and economic growth.
