Human Rights Ministry Proposes to Suspend 7 Suspects in the Closure of the Prayer House, PDIP Emphasizes the State Should Not Give Its Heart to Intolerant Perpetrators

Best for you - The step taken by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (HAM) proposing to suspend the detention of seven suspects in the case of the persecution of Christian youth retreat in Cidahu District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, has sparked controversy.
Marianus Gea, a member of the XIII DPR RI Commission from the PDI Perjuangan faction, sharply criticized the Ministry of Law and Human Rights' proposal. According to him, this action could have a negative impact on the mental state of the younger generation.
"Such attitude and actions of the Human Rights Ministry create a moral hazard for the younger generation. Yes, in the end, there will be statements, and if there is a lot of commotion, a solution will certainly be found, a peaceful way, without the need for law enforcement, and it will cause psychological trauma to future generations," said Marianus Gea to journalists on Sunday (4/7).
Ia assessed it as if the country, through the Ministry of Human Rights, is protecting the perpetrators of intolerance. He emphasized that it is a dangerous message if it is caught by children who witnessed the incident directly.
"Such actions should be seen by the Ministry of Human Rights that it creates a psychological impression, future trauma for these children, as if teaching, providing protection to intolerant perpetrators exemplified in the Cidahu incident," he said.
Marianus emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' stance in this case is wrong and does not reflect the neutral position that the institution should have as a guardian of human rights.
Not only that, but she also assessed that the action showed bias towards the perpetrator rather than the victim. Therefore, her party will question this action with the Ministry of Human Rights.
"Saya sebagai Komisi XIII, kita akan question this later in the Commission XIII Working Meeting with the Ministry of Human Rights. It's possible that the Ministry of Human Rights does not know its duties, thus it has to take the position and role of other institutions," he said.
Marianus also questioned the legal basis for the Ministry of Human Rights' involvement in the detention suspension, which he considered not within the ministry's authority.
"So there's no need for the Ministry of Human Rights to get involved there. It means that the Human Rights Ministry seems to show a bias, not being fair to all, as a guardian of human rights in Indonesia," he emphasized.
Previously, the Ministry of Human Rights has advocated for a peaceful and just resolution of the incident involving the dissolution of a Christian student retreat in Cidahu, Sukabumi Regency. This effort was emphasized through the presence of Special Staff of the Minister of Human Rights, Thomas Harming Suwarta and Stanislaus Wena, in a meeting with Forkompimda, interfaith leaders, and several local stakeholders at the Pendopo Sukabumi Regency on Thursday (3/7).
"Resolution of this case should not only emphasize a legal approach, but also consider a restorative justice approach that focuses more on recovery and social reconciliation," said Thomas Harming Suwarta in his statement on Friday (7/4).
Thomas emphasized that pluralism, diversity, and freedom of religion and belief must be the breath of the nation's life. He also reminded of the importance of building a dialogue space among religious communities so that similar events do not occur again.
"Kita must protect and take care of our diversity, because it is the greatest strength of this nation," he said.
At that occasion, Thomas also stated that the Human Rights Ministry is also urging for the suspension of detention against the seven suspects involved in the dissolution of the prayer house.
I assess that this step can open a broader dialogue without setting aside the legal process.
"We are not abolishing the legal process, but we want this dialogue space to remain alive. The state exists not only to punish, but also to heal social wounds so that society remains intact in its diversity," he concluded.
