People's Thoughts - U.S. President Donald Trump officially announced a large-scale import tariff policy against 14 major trade partners. This policy will take effect on August 1, 2025, meaning that exports from these countries to the U.S. will be subject to additional duties.
Indonesia is included in the list of affected countries, with an import tariff of 32 percent, as reported by The Washington Post.
Trump announced this through a number of official documents uploaded on his platform, Truth Social, on Monday, July 7, 2025, local time.
In letters addressed to country leaders, Trump emphasized that the United States has been harmed by global trade imbalances, where many countries impose high tariffs on American products, while their products enter the US market with low tariffs or even duty-free.
As a response, the US implemented a "reciprocal tariff" policy to encourage partner countries to open up greater access for American products.
She also emphasized that this rate is dynamic, can be reduced or renegotiated, depending on the response of each country.
Thus, this tariff policy also serves as a negotiation tool to promote more favorable bilateral trade agreements for the US.
Countries Affected
At least 14 countries will face high import tariffs comprehensively. Some of them are Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Laos, and Myanmar.
In the latest update released by Trump, some countries have experienced tariff adjustments. For example, the tariff on Cambodia was reduced from 49 percent to 36 percent, 13 percentage points lower than the decision in April. Meanwhile, the tariff on Indonesia remained unchanged.

Sri Mulyani Answers Trump's Tariff Threats
Finance Minister of Indonesia, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, finally responded to the threat by US President Donald Trump, who plans to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on BRICS member countries, including Indonesia.
On Monday, July 7, 2025, after attending the XI DPR RI Commission Work Meeting in Jakarta, Sri Mulyani stated that the government continues to monitor the developments.
The fact is, the trade dialogue process between Indonesia and the United States is still ongoing.
"Yes, we will just continue to follow (the developments), because Indonesia is still in the process of discussion with the American government," said Sri Mulyani.***
