Best for you, Surabaya - A 19-second amateur video went viral on social media after showing the moment a man suspected of stealing a phone was caught by locals in the historical area of Jalan Tunjungan, Genteng District, Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday (7/5/2025).
The video was uploaded by the Instagram account @disekitar_surabaya around 7:00 PM WIB. In the upload, a man in a checkered shirt is escorted by several people walking along the sidewalk of Jalan Tunjungan.
The upload immediately caught the attention of netizens. The video's narration mentioned that the man was caught for allegedly stealing a visitor's phone.
"BEWARE!! A thief was caught on Tunjungan Street, Surabaya, last night. Stay alert and protect yourself, Bolo. Tourist spots have been infiltrated by people like this," the account wrote.
The search "Best for you" revealed that the video was a repost from the TikTok account @pinathaa, which has now deleted its content.
Chronology of Arrest and Legal Process at Genteng Police Station, Surabaya
Kanit Reskrim Polsek Genteng Polrestabes Surabaya, AKP Vian Wijaya, confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday (3/7/2025) night. The man in the video is known to be VF (30).
According to Vian, VF initially found a Samsung phone left in a photobooth in the Jalan Tunjungan area, Surabaya. However, he did not return it to the owner or report it to the staff.
"But the reporter used the 'Find My Phone' application. Then, when it was searched and found, he was there. Yes, he was taken to Genteng Police Station," said Vian when confirmed on Saturday (5/7/2025).
Korban, a student, tracked his phone using the tracking feature and successfully found the location, which was still around Tunjungan Street.
When asked, VF initially avoided the question. However, after a search conducted by the victims' friends and local residents, the phone was found inside VF's clothing.
"It's his fault, he saw the lost phone and took it instead of reporting it to the nearby officers; Satpol PP, Dishub," said Vian.
Since it was proven that he took the phone without the intention of returning it, VF was then taken to the Genteng Police Station for further examination.
The police received an official report from the victim and immediately followed up with an examination of VF.
"Student victim. Samsung phone worth Rp2-3 million. The man tried to evade, but was eventually taken to the police station by the locals," explained Vian.
Restorative Justice at Genteng Police Station, Surabaya
After undergoing the examination, the victim and the accused agreed to resolve the case through family channels or Restorative Justice (RJ).
The forum was facilitated by members of the Genteng Police Station on Friday (4/7/2025) evening. In the forum, the victim decided not to continue the legal process.
As a result, the phone was returned to the victim, and the perpetrator submitted a written apology.
"RJ agreed. It's just an apology. The victim doesn't mind. Yes, correct, if it's RJ, the requirements must be complete. Last night, before 24 hours," Vian concluded.
In a written statement, VF promised not to repeat his actions and is ready to accept legal consequences if he repeats similar actions.
The police stated that this RJ process was carried out according to procedure and with the agreement of both parties.
This case serves as an important reminder for the people of Surabaya to remain vigilant when in public spaces, including tourist areas such as Jalan Tunjungan, Surabaya, East Java.
