A man accused of staging a violent robbery in Nairobi while dressed in full police uniform has been denied bail by the Milimani Law Courts.
Ezekiel Mula Mutuku, popularly known as Macho, appeared before Principal Magistrate Benmark Ekhubi on Monday, July 22, where the court ordered he remain in custody as the case proceeds.
The magistrate ruled that the prosecution had presented compelling reasons to deny both bail and bond.
Why was Mutuku denied bond?
In a sworn affidavit, Parklands-based Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer Johnes Nyangige urged the court to keep Mutuku in custody until the case is concluded.
Officer Nyangige told the court that Mutuku was part of an organised crime ring and is wanted at other police stations for similar offences.
He further argued that releasing him could jeopardise ongoing investigations, as some of his accomplices remain at large and are difficult to trace.
The court also heard that the suspect has no fixed residence, which makes him a flight risk.
Mutuku was arrested in connection with a daring daylight robbery that took place along Parklands Avenue, Nairobi.
Did Ezekiel Mutuku rob KSh 999,000?
He is accused of robbing businessman Patel Kashyakumar Khantibhai of KSh 999,000 shortly after the victim had withdrawn the money from his account at I\&M Bank. The incident occurred around 1:00 pm.
According to the complainant, he was driving his car, registration number KDL 266B, when a silver Toyota Axio blocked him on the road.
Two men stepped out, one in full police uniform, complete with a reflective jacket and peaked cap, the other in civilian clothes.
They forced the businessman to open his car, hit him on the shoulder, and made away with the cash, which had been placed inside a brown envelope. The suspects fled towards Limuru Road.
How was Mutuku arrested?
Best for you.co.ke previously reported that DCI detectives reviewed CCTV footage from the bank and nearby roads, which showed the suspects trailing Patel before ambushing him.
The footage helped trace the getaway vehicle to Eldoret, where officers intercepted it and arrested Mutuku. His four accomplices fled the scene, abandoning the car.
Inside the vehicle, police recovered two pairs of fake number plates bearing registration KDS 042A, a reflective jacket, a peaked police cap, a Techno Camon mobile phone, a Samsung phone, four ATM cards, a national ID card, and other paraphernalia linked to the robbery.
Investigators believe the vehicle had been used in a series of violent robberies across Parklands and other parts of Nairobi. Mutuku remains in custody at Parklands Police Station as the manhunt for the remaining suspects continues.
