The suspended Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Nasarawa State, Aliyu Bello, has been dragged to a Federal High Court 1 sitting in Lafia, following his alleged refusal to step down from office despite his suspension by leaders of his electoral ward.
The APC leaders in the Gayam Ward of Lafia Local Government Area of the state, led by its chairman, Ibrahim Iliyasu, had recently suspended Bello over alleged anti-party activities, claiming that his actions caused embarrassment to the party and undermined the credibility of their collective efforts to take the party to greater heights.
Iliyasu, therefore, approached the court to stop Bello from parading himself as a member of the All Progressives Congress and also as the party’s chairman in the state.
Addressing Journalists shortly after the court’s proceedings on Tuesday in Lafia, the state capital, counsel to the plaintiff, Isa Hassan-Nalaraba, narrated that he urged the court to restrain Bello from performing his official activities as APC chairman pending the determination of the matter.
Hassan-Nalaraba also alleged that plans had been put in place by the embattled APC Chairman to expel his client, Iliyasu and other leaders of the ward from the party, so as to enable him to remain in office despite the suspension.
He, however, noted that the court decided to commence the hearing of the substance of the case before looking towards other directions in the matter.
“The court in its wisdom has decided that it will be more appropriate if the originating summons is heard because the prayers in the motion on notice are similar, even though differently couched, than the prayers in the originating summons,” he said.
He added, “The second respondent, Dr. Aliyu Bello, has already been suspended from the party. So if the status quo is to be maintained, it means he is no longer a member of the APC pending the determination of the case.”
“Although the court declined to grant the ex-parte order restraining Dr. Bello from parading himself as a member of the APC, it did issue an order cautioning parties not to do anything that will be detrimental to the case. Any attempt to expel anybody from the party will be detrimental to the case and will be against the order of the court.”
On his part, counsel to the defendant, Thomas Oboshi, said the plaintiff’s counsel was only being speculative in his submission where he alleged plans by Aliyu Bello to expel his client from the party.
He, therefore, expressed their determination to follow up on the matter and respond appropriately to the case within the stipulated time allowed by the rules of the court.
After listening to both counsels, the Judge, Justice Mobolaji Olajiwon, said the court would rather hear the substantive case than grant a restraining order against the defendant.
She, however, directed all the parties involved to refrain from any action that could affect the smooth flow of the case, and thereafter adjourned the matter to September 25, 2025, for hearing.
