After releasing three episodes on July 16, viewers are praising it as the “blockbuster of the summer.”

As the world becomes increasingly digitalized, competition for South Korea’s summer over-the-top (OTT) is expected to be fierce. Unlike previous years, where theatre-release films fought fiercely for summer fame, this year is much calmer. All the rivalry has gone to OTT services, which are flooded with thriller, action, and hero films. Holding uncertainty for their deep ocean finds, the vibe of the 1970s is accurately captured through Ryu Seung-ryong’s flappy pants, long-haired Yang Se-jong, and wife Im Soo-jung.

This is the beginning of an epic battle of the summer season. Netflix started off strong with series Squid Game: Season 3, and will reveal suspense thriller movie Wall to Wall on July 18, delving into the horror of neighboring apartment floors. On July 25, Trigger, known for its expensive production budget, accumulating several hundred billion won, is also premiering as a crime action thriller. Wall to Wall gathers actors Kang Ha-neul, Yeom Hye-ran, and Seo Hyun-woo to tell a story of a protagonist that moved into an apartment room after breaking the bank. When strange things begin to happen between the complex floors, the teen protagonist must find a way to keep himself sane. Trigger is an alternative reality of South Korea; a country with gun shootings. Playing as a sniper, actor Kim Nam-gil plays the main role. Ma Dong-seok and Sung Dong-il’s hero series Twelve will be released in August through Disney+, telling the story of Korea’s traditional zodiac signs.

Though the saying “quality over quantity” exists, theatrical releases appear to be overwhelmed by OTT debuts based on production scale and cast. While every summertime used to be filled with new films, this year is an exception. The only films with confirmed theatre releases through June and July are Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy (lead Ahn Hyo-seop), My Daughter is A Zombie (lead Jo Jung-suk), and Pretty Crazy (lead Lim Yoo-na). This lineup pales compared to last year: Hijack 1971, Handsome Guys, Project SIlence, Escape, Pilot, Revolver, Land of Happiness, and Victory. The empty spots have been filled with Hollywood Blockbusters.

Some critics say that the drought started after all movies with pushed back release dates from the pandemic were aired. Cultural analyst Kim Hun-sik says, “Many films delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic were finally released near its end. But the two to three year delay ended up hurting many films, leading to comments on them being ‘out of touch’ and ‘not trendy.’ Viewers felt the overlapping storylines with OTT productions made it predictable and boring.” Kim continued, “The aftermath? Reduced investment and momentum for new film projects. Many filmmakers and actors have migrated to platforms like Netflix, leaving a noticeable gap in compelling theatrical releases.”

In the film industry, there are growing concerns about compelling scripts and talents shifting toward OTT platforms. Original demand for blockbuster films being enjoyed in theaters have been absorbed by streaming services. On the other hand, some argue that this phenomenon should become a motivator to produce “well-made films with reasonable budgets.” Film critic Kim Heon-shik noted, “Horror film Noise was released in June with a relatively small budget, but has already broken even. It’s even holding strong against Hollywood blockbusters.” He then added, “Blockbusters are great, but we need more films like this.”
