Best for you - The arrival of Oxford United FC in Indonesia is not just about participating in the 2025 President's Cup pre-season tournament. The club, which competes in the second tier of English football, also touched grassroots football in the country by holding a coaching clinic.
The EFL Championship contestant held a coaching clinic at GOR Soemantri Brodjonegoro Stadium, Kuningan, Jakarta, on Saturday (7/5). Two pillars of the Indonesia national team, Marselino Ferdinan and Ole Romeny, also participated in the activity.
The status of the Garuda players made Marselino and Ole the center of attention among the public and participants. Even they became the focus of dozens of young talents from three different football schools, namely Bina Bannua Football Academy, Asiop, and Graha Yatim Dhuafa Mampang, who wanted to take photos and train together with them.
Although, the Oxford United FC players who participated in the coaching clinic were Sam Long, Stan Mills, and Will Vaulks. They were accompanied by the coaching staff such as Craig Short, Chris Short, Chris Hacket, Jonny Edmunds, and Lewis Price.
Besides the coaching clinic, The U's - the nickname of Oxford United - also helps the development of several orphanages. The team managed by Gary Rowett also provides assistance and football training equipment.
"It's a proud moment to bring Oxford United to Indonesia. We have received such great support in recent years. And being able to feel that support directly is fantastic," said Grant Ferguson, Chairman of Oxford United.
Ferguson added that Oxford United FC wants to bring positive changes to Indonesian football during his short visit.
"We can hold this kind of event, which represents our ambition to leave something meaningful for Indonesia, and we are very happy to see so many children enjoying this coaching clinic," he said.
Marcelino Ferdinan, as one of the football players born and raised in Indonesia, said he is happy to be able to participate in the coaching clinic. He fully understands how valuable this opportunity is.
"It is an honor to be able to help provide inspiration for the next generation of Indonesian football. I understand how important this event is for the children here," said Marselino.
"They are very enthusiastic when talking about football, and we have contributed to giving them access to this kind of training. I am very proud to be here with Oxford United. I hope there will be more tours to Indonesia in the future," he added.
Like Marcelino, Ole Romeny also enjoyed this activity. Moreover, the participants' enthusiasm was great, making him even more motivated.
"The children's enthusiasm was very big when we entered (the coaching clinic). It's amazing, the children really love soccer. So it was a pleasant sight for us," he said.
When asked what Ole gives, he admitted it's difficult to provide an answer. He only said to continue enjoying football every day.
"What I can give to football, that (question) is difficult what I can give. I just enjoy football, that's the most important, enjoying playing with my friends every day," he said.
"Stay healthy, you know, just play football, enjoy it, and I think that's the most important thing in football. I think that's the reason you play football, because you like it, so just enjoy," concluded Ole.
