PDMA issues flood alert for major Punjab rivers
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for major rivers in the province, warning of potential flooding in the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus rivers due to expected heavy rainfall.
According to a PDMA spokesperson, there is a potential risk of flooding between July 22 and 24, and authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert. Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners across the province have been directed to complete all precautionary measures without delay.
Rescue services have also been told to remain fully prepared to respond to any emergency. PDMA Director General emphasized the immediate evacuation of people and livestock from riverbanks and low-lying areas. He further directed that flood relief camps in vulnerable regions must be equipped with food, clean drinking water, medical supplies, and other basic necessities.
Authorities are monitoring rising water levels in low-lying areas, and the public has been urged to cooperate with local administration and report any emergencies immediately.
PDMA continues to coordinate with relevant departments to ensure timely response and minimize the impact of any potential flooding.
As many as 135 people were killed while 479 were injured in Punjab during the ongoing monsoon season.
According to the spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the fourth spell of the monsoon season would last until July 26.
He said that water levels in the rivers of Punjab would increase significantly from July 22.
The spokesman further said, 'There is 49 per cent water in Mangla Dam, while 79 per cent in Tarbela Dam'.
On the other hand, PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia said that most of the people died due to roof collapse, lightning and while taking a bath in swollen rivers. 'On the instructions of the CM, bereaved families are being compensated,' he added.
The DG informed that presently, water levels in most of the rivers of Punjab and barrages were normal. 'However, the River Indus is in medium flood at Tarbela, Chashma and Taunsa,' he said, adding that the PDMA had completed its arrangements to deal with floods.
Kathia went on to say that there were fears of urban flooding in Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujranwala due to torrential rains.
He said that the Authority's control room and district emergency operation centers were monitoring the situation 24/7.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms with strong winds in Islamabad, parts of Sindh, southern Punjab, Kashmir, northeastern and southern Balochistan, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa starting from today (Monday).
According to the PMD, hot and humid weather persisted in most parts of the country over the past 24 hours, reported private news channel.
Heavy rain was expected in parts of southern Sindh, eastern Balochistan, and Kashmir, while the rest of the country will remain hot and humid. In Islamabad and surrounding areas, the weather is likely to remain partly cloudy and humid, with chances of rain at night.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, most districts were expected to remain hot and humid, but Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Kurram, and Waziristan may experience scattered rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds.
In Punjab, the weather will remain partly cloudy and humid. However, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan may receive rain and thunderstorms. Rawalpindi, Murree, Galyat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, and surrounding areas were also expected to receive rain with thunderstorms.
In Sindh, the areas of Mirpurkhas, Mithi, Tharparkar, Badin, Sujawal, Umerkot, Chhachhro, Padidan, Khairpur, Karachi, Thatta, Ghotki, Chhor, Sukkur, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Naushahro Feroze, Sanghar, Dadu, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Matiari, and Shaheed Benazirabad were expected to receive rain with thunderstorms, with some areas likely to experience heavy rainfall.
In Balochistan, most regions will remain hot and humid, but Barkhan, Sibi, Kohlu, Musakhel, Killa Saifullah, Loralai, Dera Bugti, Nasirabad, Zhob, Kalat, Khuzdar, Awaran, and Lasbela may witness rain with thunderstorms.
For Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, partly cloudy weather with rain and thunderstorms is expected. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Kashmir.
Citizens are advised to stay alert during thunderstorm activity and avoid unnecessary travel in areas where heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected.
PDMA BALOCHISTAN MOBILISED FOR MONSOON EMERGENCIES
Amid heightened flood threats during ongoing monsoon, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Balochistan has launched a province-wide emergency readiness plan, aiming to safeguard lives and property from potential flooding and rain-related disasters.
Speaking to APP, PDMA Director General Jahanzaib Khan confirmed that the government has activated District Disaster Management Authorities, empowered local administrations, and stockpiled vital relief supplies to respond swiftly across vulnerable regions.
He emphasized that clear directives from Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti will ensure accountability, coordination, and a proactive stance in tackling seasonal calamities.
Jahanzaib Khan emphasized that the Balochistan government was fully committed to ensuring swift and effective emergency response across all vulnerable districts.
The PDMA and the Irrigation Department have taken proactive measures to safeguard canals and prevent flooding in the region.
In light of recent heavy rainfall and changing weather patterns, the PDMA has activated district-level emergency teams chaired by Deputy Commissioners (DCs), with participation from key line departments, he said and added that these teams were tasked with leading rescue and rehabilitation efforts during flooding or other emergencies.
The DG PDMA assured immediate release of the Disaster Management funds and pledged the deployment of PDMA-owned heavy machinery to the districts as needed.
'The DCs, who also head District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) will the authority to utilize the funds in emergency during a crisis,' he added.
He said the DG confirmed that DCs have been authorized to hire private machinery for rescue operations, while PDMA's own equipment will also be dispatched to flood-prone areas to ensure readiness.
Jahanzaib Khan said that the Secretaries of CandW and Irrigation departments also pledged their full support, directing their respective XENs to coordinate closely with the district administrations and ensure timely provision of resources.
Jahanzaib Khan highlighted that the Balochistan government has approved a comprehensive contingency plan on June 12, reflecting its proactive stance on disaster preparedness.
'The chief minister has been directed all district administrations to complete emergency preparations based on local weather forecasts,' he added.
'Relevant departments including District administration, Health, Irrigation, Police, Livestock and others have been instructed to remain on high alert to avoid any untoward situation. The PDMA has advised DDMAs to coordinate closely with these agencies to ensure the availability of emergency personnel, inventory and essential supplies at vulnerable locations. To bolster readiness, the PDMA has stockpiled relief items for over 300 families in each district. These include tents, blankets, groceries, fuel, and machinery, ensuring rapid deployment when needed'.
The DG confirmed he will personally oversee rescue and relief operations in affected districts. He also stated that food supplies will be provided on an emergency basis wherever needed.
District Commissioners have been directed to return any unused funds from relief operations and submit machinery back to PDMA offices for inventory and audit purposes. Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti has also commended the performance of PDMA during previous rains and floods, urged continued vigilance and efficiency. Protecting lives and property is our top priority. The government will provide all necessary resources to ensure effective disaster response, he affirmed.
He stressed for the need to ensure protection of lives and properties of the people while maintaining efficiency of the concerned departments and agencies during calamities.
He assured that the provincial government would provide all necessary resources in this regard.
He said the leaves of PDMA officials have been canceled and all personnel are on high alert to respond to emergency situations unfolding across various areas of the province.
The Director General said that the Chief Minister has issued clear directives, if any department found negligent will face strict action. Each department's responsibilities have been clearly outlined in the contingency plan, he added.
