Prabowo's Negotiation Efforts So Far Have Completely Failed, Indonesia Still Faces a 32 Percent Tax Rate from the US
LEBAK PORTAL - There have been no changes to the import tariff rates for Indonesian goods set by US President Donald Trump since they were first released in April.
President Donald Trump's decision not to cancel or lower his country's import tariffs was conveyed through a letter addressed directly to President Prabowo Subianto dated July 7, 2025.
The White House letter was uploaded by him to his personal social media account Truth Social amid Prabowo Subianto's working visit schedule to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to attend the BRICS 2025 High-Level Conference.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Indonesia a Tariff of only 32 percent on all Indonesian products sent to the United States, separate from other Sectoral Tariffs," wrote Trump in his letter.
Although the Indonesian government has conducted negotiations, both personally through direct discussions between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Donald Trump, as well as by formulating the issue with ASEAN member countries.
Even since the latest import tax rates were signed by Trump on April 2, the Indonesian government has made extra efforts to negotiate by sending three of its ministers to Washington, namely Economic Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, and Foreign Minister Sugiono.
In the letter, Trump further explained that the new tariffs imposed on Indonesia were done by his side to eliminate the trade balance deficit that the US has experienced for years while cooperating with Indonesia.
"Please understand that this 32 percent figure is much less than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit disparity with your country," he explained.
The letter also contains a threat-filled announcement to Prabowo, should the Indonesian government retaliate against Trump's latest policy by increasing tariffs on goods from the United States.
"If for any reason you decide to raise the Tariff, whatever tax rate you set to increase it, will also be added to the 32 percent we charge," Trump warned.
Furthermore, Trump explained that his side would not burden Indonesia with high taxes if companies based in Indonesia immediately open their factories in the US.
"As you know, there will be no tariff if Indonesia, or companies in your country, decide to build or produce their products in the United States," he explained.
Trump added that his side guarantees that every request and permit process for moving production activities to the US will be approved within weeks.
"Dan honestly, we will do everything possible to get quick, professional, and regular approval, in weeks," he continued.
Selain Indonesia, Trump juga menyurati beberapa kepala negara lainnya terkait hal serupa mayoritas negara anggota ASEAN seperti Kamboja (dikenakan tarif 36 persen), Laos (40 persen), Malaysia (25 persen), Myanmar (40 persen), dan Thailand (36 persen).
Other countries that also received tariff updates are Japan (25 percent), South Korea (25 percent), South Africa (30 percent), Bangladesh (35 percent), Tunisia (25 percent), Kazakhstan (25 percent), Serbia (35 percent), and Bosnia (30 percent). ***
