PROFILE Who is Annisa Fitri Yusuf, the Initiator of the International Art Borneo 2025 Exhibition
Best for you, PONTIANAK - The name Annisa Fitri Yusuf became viral in the city of Pontianak after the success of the International Art Borneo Exhibition from June 20 to 28 at the Dekranasda Kalimantan Barat Building, Pontianak City.
How not, Annisa Fitri Yusuf is the person who initiated that prestigious exhibition in Pontianak City.
Curious about his appearance?
Annisa has had a deep understanding of art since she was a child.
She likes to write, draw on the edges of books, and create poems about rain, which would become the beginning of her journey in discovering art.
However, over time, he found that art is not only about expression but also a tool for recording, resistance, and healing.
"I like writing in my diary, making small poems about rain, and drawing on the edges of textbooks. My interest grew when I started realizing that artistic expression could be a way to convey feelings that are hard to express directly, especially as a woman living in a rather rigid social structure," said Annisa when she was met on Friday, July 4, 2025.
• Annisa Fitri Yusuf and the Voice of Women Revived Through Art
A woman born in Sengkang, January 24, 1999, studied a Master's degree in Indonesian Language Education at Universitas Sebelas Maret.
For her, the academic world opened a new way of creating.
"Studying at the Postgraduate Program in Indonesian Language Education has opened my perspective on language, narratives, and representations. I have become more aware that language is not just a means of communication, but also a structure of power. This perspective I bring into my art, especially when working with issues of identity, gender, and local culture," he said.
Annisa said that her college experience made her more sensitive in reading texts and contexts.
"Such knowledge has greatly strengthened the theoretical foundation in my art projects, which often combine educational and artistic approaches simultaneously," he said.
"One of the biggest challenges is facing the strong patriarchal culture, both systemic and in daily practice. Sometimes women's voices are considered not important enough, or the leadership positions of women in the arts are still doubted," he said.
According to her, another challenge lies in the limited infrastructure support and appreciation for women-based art or art that addresses critical issues.
"Indeed, from there I learned to build a network, create space, and fight for women's representation in art leadership," she said.
For Annisa, art has a very important role in fighting for women's issues and gender equality.
"Your power is extraordinary as a medium of awareness. It can enter the realm of emotions and empathy, opening up non-confrontational yet sharp dialogue spaces. In the context of women's issues and gender equality, art can become a bridge to voice the experiences of women's bodies that are often silenced, belittled, or stigmatized," he said.
In addition, according to him, art can be a tool to create alternative narratives, build solidarity, and even heal the wounds inherited from structural inequalities.
Salah satu karya yang paling personal bagi Annisa adalah sebuah pertunjukan yang menyentuh soal tubuh dan tradisi.
"Pesurong: Women Carrying the Sixth Plate. This is an installation and performance work that highlights the body of the Sambas Malay woman within the context of tradition, communal eating culture, and patriarchal structures. The work explores how women are often burdened with symbols of politeness and service without being recognized as subjects," added Annisa.
She also wrote poems about women's experiences and initiated a research and archive program for indigenous women in the collective emehdeyeh, a community-based art space in West Kalimantan.
In addition to being active in the local collective, Annisa also leads Art Borneo, a cross-border platform she founded.
"Art Borneo is a transnational platform (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei) that I founded as a meeting space for artists from the Borneo region. Its focus is to build an art network across borders, facilitate exhibitions, and voice local issues related to identity, environment, and culture," he explained.
At Art Borneo, Annisa serves as the Program Director, managing curation, cross-border communication, and event production. Meanwhile, at Kolektif emehdeyeh, Annisa is an Art Manager, program director, as well as an artist and writer, where their focus is on social and environmental issues with an interdisciplinary approach.
One of the most memorable collaborations was the AYA & Batang Garing project.
"A performance that combines animated film, traditional music, and oral literature talimaa. This project involves artists from various disciplinary and ethnic backgrounds in Kalimantan, and is presented in the Indonesia Bertutur 2024 program in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia," said Annisa.

Annisa stated that it had a significant impact, not only creating works but also building cross-community networks, opening up conversations about Dayak identity, and reviving local narratives that were almost submerged. This collaboration broadened perspectives and strengthened cultural solidarity.
Looking at the art ecosystem in Kalimantan, Annisa points out the importance of real support for local artists.
"The most urgent issue is infrastructure and policies that support the sustainability of local artists, including access to funding, working spaces, and distribution of works. In addition, it is also important to build a contextual documentation, archive, and art education system rooted in local values but open to the world," he emphasized.
I believe that strengthening community-based leadership and women, as well as creating intergenerational and multilingual dialogue spaces in Borneo, is equally important.
Annisa dreams of seeing more women leading art spaces, not only as artists but also as decision-makers, archivists, curators, and facilitators.
"Saya ingin seni di Kalimantan Barat tumbuh dari nilai-nilai lokal yang kritis, bukan semata-mata meniru pusat. Saya berharap ada ekosistem yang saling menopang antara institusi, komunitas, dan individu serta ruang-ruang yang benar-benar aman dan inklusif bagi perempuan berkarya," kata Annisa.
She believes that art can be a collective healing medium, and she wants to take part in this process together with other great women in Kalimantan and surrounding areas.
