The Fate of Coach Mochizuki After Failing to Lead the Indonesia Women's National Team to the 2026 Australia Asian Cup

Best for you, JAKARTA - Indonesia Women's National Team failed in the 2026 Asian Cup Qualification. The team coached by Satoru Mochizuki failed to secure a ticket to the Asian Cup.
Then, in such a situation, what will be the fate of the coach of the Indonesia Women's National Team, Mochizuki, after failing to lead them to the 2026 Asia Cup in Australia?
Seeing this, the President of PSSI, Erick Thohir, gave an answer.
The PSSI will assess Mochizuki's performance going forward, especially since his contract has only five months left.
Satoru Mochizuki wants to be given more time to build the Indonesia women's national team.
The Japanese coach failed to lead Garuda Pertiwi to qualify for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup, which will be held in Australia.
President of PSSI, Erick Thohir, stated that he wants to continue evaluating Mochizuki's performance, whose contract will end in five months.
In a press conference after the Asian Qualification match against Taiwan, which ended with a score of 1-2 at Indomilk Arena, Tangerang Regency, Saturday (7/5/2025).
Seeing the disappointing results, Satoru Mochizuki hoped that his contract would be extended.
She wants to make the women's national team more competitive.
So indeed, when we build a team, it takes a long time. We continue to build it bit by bit so that it can become solid.
"Makanya, I think that if given a chance, I want to build this team bit by bit so that it can become a very strong team," said Mochizuki.
This 61-year-old coach took as an example Japan's success in winning the world championship in 2011 in Germany and the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in England.
At that time, Mochizuki served as an assistant coach for Norio Sasaki.
Me and the Japanese team had the opportunity to win the Women's World Cup (2011). For Japan to achieve this, they have worked hard and developed for 10 years, 20 years, even 30 years.
"So I also want to take the good things that can be applied in Indonesia and want to continue developing women's football in Indonesia," he added.
After failing to qualify for the Asian Cup, Garuda Pertiwi will now focus on the ASEAN Women's Championship or the AFF U-19 Women's Championship, which will be held next month in Vietnam.
"We always want to win and be the champion in every tournament. Now we are striving towards that goal. So now we are thinking about how to win," he explained.
Mochizuki also mentioned that it is possible that his team will not be strengthened by several diaspora players in the upcoming tournament.
However, he remains optimistic about the quality of the existing players such as Sheva Imut, Helsya Maeisyaroh, and Reva Octaviani.
"Perhaps we will be without diaspora players in AFF, because they are playing in the league. But we still have good players with extraordinary skills such as Sheva, Helsya, and Reva," said Mochizuki.
In the ASEAN Women's Championship, Indonesia is in Group A together with Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia.
Mochizuki sees the meeting with Vietnam and Thailand as an opportunity to improve his team's quality.
So when we want to be a team that will eventually be able to continue playing in the Asian Cup and qualify there, obviously we also have to keep looking at strong opponents like Thailand, Myanmar.
"We must continue to try to fight them, we also see their strength, and we must get used to fighting them and winning, so that we can continue to move up in level ahead," he concluded.
