Changpeng Zhao is one of the co-founders and former CEO of Binance, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world.
Zhao started his career as a software developer and built trading programs, founding his first technology startup in 2005. His transition to the crypto world began in 2013 when he played poker with Bobby Lee, who was then the CEO of BTCC, one of the earliest cryptocurrency exchanges.
Lee recommended that Zhao invest 10% of his cash in Bitcoin. However, after doing some research, Zhao sold his apartment and put everything on Bitcoin, but the currency plummeted.
However, Bitcoin then strengthened, Zhao held on, and saw an opportunity to build his own cryptocurrency exchange. In 2017, Zhao founded Binance, which turned a profit in about 90 days.
Zhao led Binance until 2023, when he stepped down after pleading guilty to criminal charges for violating U.S. anti-money laundering laws. Binance paid a fine of $4.3 billion in the case.
According to the final 2024 report published by Forbes, the company, Binance, exceeded 250 million registered users by the end of 2024. Zhao is believed to own 90% of the exchange.
2. Brian Armstrong (US$15 billion)
Brian Armstrong also co-founded the popular cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase (COIN), in 2012 with Fred Ehrsam. The company was listed on the NASDAQ stock market in 2021 and currently has a market capitalization of approximately US$89 billion, with Armstrong as its CEO.
Like Zhao, Armstrong started his career as a software engineer and eventually joined Airbnb. There, he realized how long it took to send payments to South America and how high the fees were and unclear. Armstrong saw an opportunity for crypto to change that.
When he was still at Airbnb, he started writing code during nights and weekends to develop a place to buy and store cryptocurrencies, which eventually became Coinbase.
By the end of April 2025, Armstrong owned approximately 13% of Coinbase, according to reported holdings and the total number of outstanding shares disclosed in the company's financial report on May 10.
3. Winklevoss Twins (US$13.7 billion)
The Winklevoss twins, both former Olympic rowers, are perhaps best known for their legal battle with Mark Zuckerberg over the founding of Facebook, which claimed that the idea for the social network originally belonged to them.
