Best for you - U.S. President Donald Trump wrote to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto regarding Indonesia's 32 percent import tariff that will take effect on August 1.
Besides Prabowo, several other countries received letters from Trump regarding the revision of his import tariff policy.
The letters were fully uploaded by Trump through his social media account Truth Social on Monday (7/7/2025) US time.
In his letter to Prabowo, Trump openly mentioned that the trade cooperation with Indonesia has caused the US to suffer a deficit.
"Nevertheless, we have decided to continue moving forward with you, but only with more balanced and fair trade," wrote Trump.
Trump stated that, during the trade relationship with Indonesia, the US faced tariff policies, non-tariff policies, and trade-restricting policies.
She added that, under these conditions, the US did not provide corresponding tariff responses to Indonesia for many years.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 32 percent tariff on all Indonesian products sent to the US," said Trump.
"Please understand that the 32 percent figure is much smaller than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit gap with your country," he continued.
Nevertheless, Trump said that the tariffs could be canceled if the Indonesian government or companies invest directly in the US by building factories.
"Like you know, there will be no tariffs if Indonesia, or the companies in your country, decide to build or produce the products in the U.S.," wrote Trump.
Trump also threatened that if Indonesia raises import tariffs on American goods, Washington will impose tariffs above 32 percent.
"Please understand that this tariff is needed to correct Indonesia's tariff and non-tariff policies over the years, as well as trade barriers that have caused an unsustainable trade deficit with the US," said Trump.
He also still opens negotiation opportunities with Indonesia before the deadline of August 1 is implemented.
"This rate can be modified, increased or decreased, depending on our relationship with your country. You will never be disappointed with the US," closed Trump.
Indonesia's efforts
Reported by Kompas.com, Hasan Nasbi, Head of Presidential Communications, assured that the Indonesian government will continue negotiations on imposing a 32 percent import tariff with the US.
Hasan Nasbi mentioned that the negotiation team has now arrived in Washington DC, USA, to resume negotiations.
"our negotiation team is already in (Washington) DC. Our negotiation team that will continue the discussion is already in DC this morning," said Hasan at a press conference at the Kwarnas Building, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (8/7/2025).
Hasan said that the negotiations will be carried out by Minister of Coordinating Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
Airlangga is currently on his way from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to the US, after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the BRICS High-Level Conference.
Hasan continued, the latest announcement from Trump actually proves that there is still a longer negotiation space.
The announcement, Trump set a deadline for imposing the tariffs starting August 1, 2025.
