Prof. Lar Patricia Manko, acting Vice Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University (Formerly University of Abuja) has said that the 11,000 hectares of land is a legacy asset given to the institution by the Federal Government.

While acknowledging the FCT minister Nyesom Wike as FCT's landlord, the VC said University land can never be too much and the institution has a plethora of uses for the property.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that at the inauguration of access roads to Giri district in the FCT on June 30, Wike alleged that the university 'grabbed 11,000' hectares of land.

'No document, nothing. That's all you see there, fencing everywhere. And before you know it, they were going to sell our land. So, I've told the Director of Lands and the other relevant agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give it to the university.

'They are the ones who are going to protect it because we are going to provide the roads here.

'And that's the situation. We cannot allow it at all,' the minister had said.

Manko, however, said that the 11,000 hectares of land was legitimately given to the institution by the federal government and the controversy is already being handled.

She said the university has plans for the use of the expanse of land ranging from agriculture, tourism, research centres, quarters for members of staff and student hostels, among others.

The acting VC said due to lack of funds to finance some of the projects, the institution has entered into some Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) for the development.

She noted that the current staff quarters of the institution are temporarily built on plots of land given to the university by the military and there are plans to construct permanent structures at the institution's permanent site.

The acting VC said many investors are partnering with the institution in the development of the projects on the 11,000 hectares of land.

Prof. Lar described how the university was plunged into an unhealthy environment prior to her appointment on February 6, 2025, highlighting key achievements such as restoring governance, reviving academic systems, and elevating student welfare.

'There was a toxic environment… a lot of unmotivated staff, both teaching and non-teaching,' she said, adding that she never received a hand-over note from her predecessor.

'It took me over a month to engage over 17 faculties. I then gained an understanding of how people felt.'

Speaking on the issue of the university's land seizure, Prof. Lar stated, 'University land can never be too much. There is a need for better facilities.'

A Professor of Microbiology from the University of Jos said she had inherited over 300 petitions related to delayed promotions and welfare issues. 'Promotions were delayed, denied. The crisis spilled into the alumni association,' she said.

She, however, added that her administration swiftly responded-processing overdue promotions and reconciling fractured campus unions (ASUU, SSANU, NASU).

She also noted that she restructured the Academic Quality Assurance Office and introduced reforms such as PowerPoint-led examinations in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, stressing that timely result submissions returned, and infrastructure repairs - supported by TETFUND - began across lecture halls and classrooms.

She added that under her watch, the Student Affairs Directorate was relaunched, boreholes and improved toilet facilities were approved, and free campus shuttle services were introduced.

'The voice of students was scuttled due to lack of unionism,' she said, adding that her administration replaced the imposed parliamentary student union model with a more democratic presidential structure.
