The Season Six (6) Young Minds Intellectual Quiz Championship competition for basic school pupils in the Keta Municipality and the Anloga District of the Volta Region has been launched at a brief ceremony at Tegbi in the Anloga District.
The launch of the event marks the beginning of the seventh (7th) year of the quiz contest being championed by the Young Foundation Builders’ Network (YFBN), a Christian-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based at Keta and Anloga with the sole aim of positively building the country’s leaders of tomorrow through such initiatives.
The occasion brought together a number of pupils and teachers from some of the basic schools in the two respective and participating districts. Also present were contestants and the reigning champions for Season Five (5) of the competition, Dzidedi Community Basic School from Anloga.
In this year’s Season, three (3) centers have been selected for the quiz competitions. These are Anloga, Tegbi and Keta where at any time, two (2) of the three (3) centers will host two (2) sessions of the contest which will examine the contestants in Integrated Science, Mathematics, Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) as well as English Language.
In all, thirty-two (32) schools are taking part in the current Season. They include nine (9) ceded schools from Season Five (5) who would join the current twenty-three (23) schools after the group stages for the other stages through to the grand finale.
The Young Minds Intellectual Quiz competition initiative was started in 2018 by a group of young teachers and educational enthusiasts in the two districts to address the abysmal performance of pupils at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) level, attributed partly to the lack of good grounding in the basics of the major elective subjects including Mathematics, Integrated Science and ICT.
Launching the contest, the Executive Producer for the Young Minds Intellectual Quiz Championship, Mr. Courage Fiawogbey told our newsteam in an interview that the initiative is aimed among other things at bridging the knowledge gap among the pupils, thereby helping build the future of these children to effectively contribute their quota to the development of the country.
He disclosed that since the inception of the contest some six (6) years ago, pupils’ academic performance, confidence level and the general enthusiasm towards studies have improved tremendously not only in the beneficiary schools but also in their internal and external examinations.
Mr. Fiawogbey regretted that funding continues to be the greatest challenge facing the initiative, six (6) years down the lane. According to him, funds for awards, transportation, feeding and refreshment for the contestants, their supporters and teachers, training for teachers, perdiem for quiz masters as well as general logistics issues continue to hit the contest very hard to the extent that the organizers nearly gave up the initiative in the Season Five (5) competition.
The Executive Producer therefore renewed his appeal to all stakeholders and lovers of education and children in the region to come to the aid of the programme. He also appealed to the Members of Parliament (MPs) and Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the region to specifically take up some of the wards to motivate these young ones to aspire to greater heights in life and in education.
The Secretary of the Anloga District Chapter of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) and Proprietor of the Light Academy, Rev. Desmond Edem Dedzo who chaired the function, commended the organizers for the laudable initiative, saying the move would go a long way to shape the minds of the young children.
The 2025 Miss Tegbi Beauty Pageant winners were also present at the event. The ultimate winner, Miss Bernice Enyonam Akpalu, First Runner-Up, Francisca Mawuena Dameshie and the Second Runner-Up, Cynthia Etornam Ahlie, were grateful to the organizers for creating such an opportunity for the young ones to thrive in their studies. Ms. Akpalu (Mama Tegbi, 2025) who spoke on behalf of her colleagues, thanked the teachers for the immense role they are playing in the lives of their pupils.
The Season Five (5) champions from the Dzidedi Community Basic School at Anloga also spoke with our newsteam. Princess Edem Kuvor and Bright Evans described last year’s competition as smooth and difficult but truly exciting, adding that their school is poised for another grab of the ultimate trophy for the Season Six (6) competition.
