ASEAN Tariff to Indonesia Remains 32 Percent, What About Other ASEAN Countries?
Jakarta, IDN Times - Indonesia is still subject to a 32 percent tariff by the United States (US). The US president announced it through a letter shared with 14 other countries, including 5 ASEAN countries.
This number has not changed from what Trump stated on April 2, when he first announced the list of hundreds of countries subject to reciprocal tariffs.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Indonesia a Tariff of only 32 percent on each and every Indonesian product sent to the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," said Trump in the letter, which was sent on Monday (7/7/2025).
In the letter, Trump added that goods sent back to avoid higher tariffs would be subject to those higher tariffs.
"Please understand that the 32 percent figure is much lower than what is needed to eliminate the trade deficit gap we have with your country," he added.
Then, what percentage of the tariff do other ASEAN countries receive?
1. Malaysia
The neighboring country of Indonesia, Malaysia, also participated in negotiations with the US regarding these tariffs. However, they ended up adding 1 percent tariff from the US.
"our relationship, unfortunately, is far from reciprocal. Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a Tariff on Malaysia only 25 percent on each and all Malaysian products sent to the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," Trump said in his letter.
Malaysia is one of the countries that also received a letter from Trump regarding this reciprocity. In April, Malaysia was subjected to a 24 percent tariff, and this number increased by 1 percent based on the letter they received.

Other ASEAN countries that received "love letters" from Trump are Thailand. King Vajiralongkorn and the acting Prime Minister were sent tariff letters by the US president.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a Thailand Tariff of only 36 percent on all Thai products sent to the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," said Trump.
In April last year, Thailand also received similar figures. Like Indonesia, the negotiations of the Land of the White Elephant also failed.
Moreover, currently, a political crisis is also occurring in Thailand, after the prime minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was dismissed.
3. Cambodia
Trump's letter was also addressed to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Nevertheless, Cambodia managed to reduce the tariff rate from 49 percent to 36 percent.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a Tariff on Cambodia only at 36 percent on each and every product from Cambodia sent to the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," said Trump.
4. Laos
Laos also received a letter from Trump. The letter was addressed to the President of Laos, Thongloun Siaoulith.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 40 percent tariff on Laos for all Laotian products sent to the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs," said Trump.
This number has dropped eight percent from what Trump presented in April. At that time, Laos received 48 percent, and now it is 40 percent.

Myanmar's military junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, also received a letter from Trump. It mentioned the reduction of tariffs from 44 percent to 40 percent.
"Starting August 1, 2025, we will impose a 40 percent tariff on Myanmar for all Burmese products sent to the United States, separate from all sectoral tariffs. Goods re-exported to avoid higher tariffs will be subject to those higher tariffs," Trump said in his letter.
She emphasized, there should be no retaliatory tariffs if you don't want the numbers to go higher again.
6. Vietnam
So far, only Vietnam has been able to lower its reciprocal tariffs. Vietnam's negotiation approach with the US is considered successful.
Without this agreement, Vietnamese products face tariffs of up to 46 percent, one of the highest in Trump's tariff plan.
While the Philippines and Singapore did not receive a letter from Trump. In April, it was stated that the Philippines received a reciprocal tariff of 17 percent, while Singapore received 10 percent.
