In addition to attending the BRICS Summit to be held at the Museum of Modern Art (MMA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, President Prabowo is also scheduled to attend the bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Brazil in Brasilia on July 8-9, 2025. During the meeting, President Prabowo Subianto and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are expected to discuss the incident of Juliana Marins' death.
"We will listen later, perhaps there will be a discussion during the bilateral talks between President Prabowo and President Brazil," said Minister of Coordination for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Prison Affairs Yusril Ihza Mahendra in a press conference in Jakarta, Friday (4/7/2025).
So far, it is clear to Yusril, the Indonesian government has never received any letter or diplomatic note from the Brazilian government questioning the death of Juliana Marins. The Brazilian government, said Yusril, only sent its air force plane to Bali to bring Juliana's body back and there were no complaints or questions about the case.
Nevertheless, he said that indeed there are many statements coming from the family as well as human rights defenders (HAM) from The Federal Public Defender's Office of Brazil (FPDO). However, Yusril understands that Juliana's family is sad and grieving the loss of one of their members. Yusril also understands the task of FPDO, which focuses on HAM, just like the National Commission (Komnas) HAM in Indonesia.
Although there is potential for discussion between the President of Indonesia and the President of Brazil regarding the Juliana incident, Yusril stated that it is highly unlikely for Prabowo to meet with the FPDO because it is not within his level. "But, if the President (Prabowo) wants to meet Juliana's family, I don't know. That is personal, and we have not received any such request yet," he said.
Yusril also asked all parties to maintain the good relations between Indonesia and Brazil regarding the incident of the death of Juliana Marins in Mount Rinjani, West Nusa Tenggara, on June 26. "Good relations and bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Brazil must remain intact and should not be disturbed by this incident of Juliana Marins' death," said Yusril.
She emphasized that the Indonesian government is very focused and grieving over Juliana's death, which occurred after she fell into a 600-meter deep ravine on the cliff of Mount Rinjani. The government, Yusril said, considers this incident as an accident that can happen to any mountain climber, especially due to the difficult terrain of Rinjani and the extreme weather conditions at that time.
