Big Rebranding of Indonesian Football: Liga 1 Returns to Super League, LIB Becomes I-League
Monthly of Bulukumba - That night, in the cold and formal meeting room, a major decision was made. Like reviving long-buried memories, PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) restored the name "Super League" as the highest identity of the national football league. On the glowing presentation screen, the word "I-League" replaced "LIB"—a rebranding more than just a name change; it is a declaration of a new identity.
The decision was announced after the annual and extraordinary General Meeting of Shareholders (RUPS) of LIB on Monday, July 7, 2025. The top two tiers of the domestic competition changed their names: Liga 1 returned to the name Super League, and Liga 2 is now called Championship. Only the third tier remained faithful to its name: Liga Nusantara. As if signaling that grassroots football should not be disturbed by the commotion of elite branding.
"Starting this season, they have also rebranded. The corporate entity remains Liga Indonesia Baru, but the brand name is I-League," said LIB's Director, Ferry Paulus, as quoted. ANTARA His voice is firm, as if emphasizing that this is not just a cosmetic decision, but a strategic move to strengthen the league's position in the eyes of the public and the world.
Digging up the name that once was successful
The name "Super League" is not new. It was successful in the past, specifically from the 2008/09 season until 2015, before the dualism struck the PSSI. At that time, the name replaced the Divisi Utama Liga Indonesia after the merger of professional competitions and Perserikatan in 1994. However, internal conflicts changed everything, and since 2017, the public has been familiar with the name "Liga 1".
Now, history is being replayed. The Super League has been revived with a new breath and different enthusiasm. It's not just about repeating, but trying to perfect. "If the LIB is somehow not strong enough, that's why we want this not to be... we will still keep our brand name as I-League," added Ferry, emphasizing the importance of the impression of "strength" in the image of the competition.
Along with these changes, League 2 also changed its name to "Championship," adopting the European league style. While Liga Nusantara remained on its path, perhaps because the name was already rooted in society, or because not everything needs to change with the wave of transformation.
Kick-Off with the aroma of surprise
The opening match of the first season of the Super League will be held on August 8, 2025. The opening game will see Persebaya Surabaya face off against the promoted team PSIM Yogyakarta. It is not a classic match between the defending champion and the runner-up, nor a derby with a rich history. But precisely this is the essence of change: no longer following the old conventions, but choosing something fresh, unique, and full of passion.
"The start of the Super League is not a step back, because we never previously mentioned a date," explained Ferry. "Why Persebaya vs PSIM? Because we don't have to bring the champions of Liga 1 and Liga 2. We can choose anyone." In other words, the opening match is no longer just a formality. Now, what is being pursued is emotional appeal and audience attraction.
Persebaya and PSIM have strong supporter bases. The opening match at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium will be a football festival, not just a game. It is there that the new era of the Super League will begin—accompanied by cheers, drums, and optimism about the new direction of Indonesian football. ***
