She highlighted that in the past week, various extreme weather events have occurred, such as heavy rain, strong winds, floods, landslides, and transportation accidents, including the incident of the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ship sinking in the Bali Strait on July 2, 2025.
Dwikorita emphasized that the event was in line with the early warning from BMKG that had been conveyed since H-1 up to a week earlier. She added that BMKG continues to update weather forecasts and potential extreme weather through various communication channels.
By the end of June 2025, about 30 percent of the seasonal zones in Indonesia had entered the dry season, far below the normal condition which usually reaches more than 60 percent at the same time. This is caused by abnormal rainfall that has been above normal since early May and continues, especially in the regions of Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. Even on July 2, 2025, Deli Serdang Geophysical Station recorded extreme rainfall of 142 mm, and in West Papua it reached 103 mm.
Deputy Head of Meteorology, BMKG, Guswanto, explained that the current atmospheric conditions are triggered by the weak Australian Monsoon, active equatorial waves such as Rossby and Kelvin, as well as the influence of tropical cyclone seed 98W near Luzon, causing an increase in wind speed in the South China Sea. In addition, cyclonic circulation in the western Indian Ocean near Sumatra and the northern Pacific Ocean near Papua New Guinea create convergence and confluence zones in several waters of Indonesia.
The phenomenon triggered high waves and heavy rain in the Java Sea, Flores Sea, and northern Maluku region. Guswanto emphasized the importance of attention from the shipping and fishing sectors due to the increased risk to maritime safety.
Public Meteorology Director of BMKG, Andri Ramdhani, presented the weather forecast for the period July 4-10, 2025. During July 4-6, areas to be alert include West Sulawesi, Maluku, and South Papua. Meanwhile, potential strong winds are expected in Riau Islands, Banten, West Java, East Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, Sulawesi, and Papua. On July 7-10, Mountainous Papua is predicted to experience heavy rain.
Faced with this situation, Dwikorita emphasized that all transportation operators must take BMKG weather information as part of their standard operating procedures. She stressed the importance of regular monitoring of meteorological data to ensure public safety.
Furthermore, Dwikorita invited the entire community to not ignore weather information, especially when planning trips during school holidays. Local governments, agricultural sector actors, disaster management, logistics, and tourism are requested to use weather data as the basis for planning and decision-making.
