Called "Import Wheat from the US", This is the Profile of Indofood
Jakarta, IDN Times - Wheat will become one of the agricultural products that Indonesia will import from the United States (US), despite the 32 percent tariff negotiations with President Donald Trump hitting a dead end.
The Chairman of the Indonesian Wheat Flour Producers Association (Aptindo), Franciscus "Franky" Welirang, stated that the memorandum of understanding (MoU) that has been signed is non-binding. However, business relations between the two countries' business actors are certainly maintained well.
"The MoU is not binding, but in business, we still have a good relationship," he told IDN Times, Tuesday (8/7/2025).
Previously, Aptindo agreed with the American Wheat Association (US) to purchase 1 million tons of wheat from the US annually from 2026 to 2030.
The signing between Aptindo and the American wheat association was held on Monday (7/7/2025) afternoon. Regarding the import mechanism, Franky explained that Aptindo only acts as an association. Meanwhile, wheat imports are directly handled by each member, which are flour mills.
"Import of wheat is carried out by each member's business unit, that is, the flour mill," he said.
One of the Aptindo members mentioned as likely to import wheat from the US is PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk (ICBP) or Indofood. Here is the profile of Indofood as quoted from Fortune Indonesia:
1. History of Indofood
Indofood is not just an ordinary company in Indonesia, as it is one of the giants in the food industry in Indonesia, through its world-famous instant noodle product, Indomie.
However, initially, Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur was a company named PT Panganjaya Intikusuma, established in 1990, and engaged in the snack food business.
The company is a subsidiary of Salim Group, which later merged with Sanmaru Food Manufacturing on March 1, 1994, resulting in a new company named Indofood Sukses Makmur.
Sanmaru Food Manufacturing Co. Ltd was established in the 1970s and operates in the food and beverage industry. The company, founded by Djajadi Djaja, Wahyu Tjuandi, Ulong Senjaya, and Pandi Kusuma, started its factory in 1972 and produces a product named Indomie. Indomie is an abbreviation for "Indonesia mie."
Before joining Indofood, Sanmaru once used the production facilities owned by Salim Group to make Indomie. These production facilities emerged after Sudono Salim, the owner of Salim Group, made a large investment in the instant noodle industry by establishing PT Sarimi Asli Jaya in 1977, with the product branded as Sarimie.
The cooperation in using Salim Group's facilities was carried out by forming a joint venture under the banner of PT Indofood Interna in 1984. The share distribution was that Salim held 42.5 percent and the remaining 57.5 percent was controlled by Djajadi.
Salim Group, through its subsidiary Indofood, also acquired PT Lima Satu Sankyu, the manufacturer of Supermie, which was established in 1968. As its name suggests, this joint venture between Sjarif Adil Sagala and Eka Widjaya Moeis with Sankyu Shokushin Kabushiki Kaisha (Japan) produces instant noodles under the brand Supermi.
In 1977, the company changed its name to PT Lima Satu Sankyu Indonesia. Then, in 1989, after becoming a Domestic Investment (PMDN), the company was taken over by Indofood Group and changed its name again to PT Lambang Insan Makmur, with 100% of its shares controlled by PT Indofood International Corporation.
