PR JABAR - The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) once again warned about the potential for extreme weather in various regions of Indonesia. Heavy rainfall is predicted to continue falling over most areas until July 12, 2025. This situation occurs during the dry season, which should be dry, thus potentially causing serious impacts such as floods, landslides, strong winds, and high waves.
Heavy Rain in the Dry Season, Weather Anomalies Continue to Move
According to BMKG, the current weather phenomenon is considered unusual because heavy rain is occurring during the dry season. This is caused by atmospheric anomalies that have been moving from one area to another since June last year. Some factors that trigger this extreme rainfall include:

53 Percent of Affected Areas, From Java to Papua
Based on monitoring, about 53 percent of Indonesia's territory is experiencing rain with characteristics above normal , especially from late June to early July 2025. The affected areas include most of Java Island, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), parts of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, up to Papua.
BMKG also recorded extreme rainfall in several locations. For example, in North Sumatra, the Geophysical Station recorded rainfall of 142 mm in one day. While in West Papua, the Meteorological Station recorded rainfall intensity up to 103 mm.
Atmospheric Conditions Still Humid, MJO Phase 2 Does Not Reduce Rain Potential
Although the MJO is currently in phase 2, which is the Indian Ocean region that is usually not very active in forming rain clouds in Indonesia, regional atmospheric dynamics are still very active. Air humidity in southern Indonesia remains high due to the weakening of the Australian monsoon.
In addition, equatorial wave activities and other intra-seasonal factors such as Rossby and Kelvin waves also contribute to strengthening the formation of rain clouds. This is why convective clouds bringing rain continue to form extensively in various regions.

BMKG reminds that this extreme weather phenomenon not only causes heavy rain, but can also be accompanied by:
