Ibadan North primaries: APC stakeholders decry conundrum, seek Tinubu’s intervention

A group of stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has decried the impasse in the party’s primaries to elect a candidate for the by-election into Ibadan North Federal Constituency and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene before the matter gets out of hand.

The group, in a statement in Ibadan on Monday, said all important party stakeholders in the state and beyond should mediate in the conundrum before the APC in the federal constituency and the state is thrown into crisis following the by-election.

The APC in Oyo State had planned their party’s primary for Saturday, 19 July, to elect a candidate for the vacant Ibadan North Federal Constituency seat, in an election scheduled for 16 August 2025 by INEC.

Spokesperson of the concerned APC members in the constituency, Mr Tiamiyu Adegoke, from Ward 8 of Ibadan North Local Government Area, said in the statement that they had written to “alert President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and all other important party leaders in South-West Nigeria on the need to intervene and mediate in the ongoing political crossfire that has enveloped the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ibadan North Local Government Area.”

According to him, the current impasse was a result of “the ill-fated and unsuccessful organisation of delegates’ congress and primary for the by-election this past weekend,” saying it was important stakeholders took steps early to avert a poor outing in the coming by-election.

Adegoke said: “This group of stakeholders are making this necessary call to ensure the APC in Ibadan North doesn’t get torn apart beyond redemption if appropriate, legitimate and open approaches are not employed by relevant party delegations in managing the primaries process to elect a flagbearer, who will represent the party in the forthcoming 16 August 2025 by-election.”

He said they lamented roles “being played by different layers of stakeholders in protecting particular interests from inception of INEC announcement, principal amongst which is the Minister of Power, Hon Bayo Adelabu, and the acting National Party Chairman, Hon Ali Dalori, in imposing a particular aspirant via undemocratic means owing to previous personal relationships, and not based on competence, open competition or free will of other aspirants.”

The stakeholders lamented that a delegates’ congress scheduled to hold on Saturday, 19 July, couldn’t take place because of controversial delegates’ lists, “with thousands of party members stranded in the sun for several hours across the 12 wards of Ibadan North.

“Neither Oyo State APC nor the Congress Committee from Abuja had meaningful explanations for all aspirants in this regard.

“Later on, it was announced that a harmonised pre-approved delegate list is to be used to conduct the primaries, which was now scheduled for Sunday, 20 July 2025. Disappointingly, the said list was reportedly not shared with other aspirants until around 40 minutes to the commencement of the primaries exercise, and on sighting the list,” saying all the aspirants except one rejected the list and insisted that it could not be used, as they alleged that it was doctored.

He added that the delegates’ list was rejected by the aspirants because “the list was already skewed, manipulated and designed to favour just one aspirant, who was allocated over 40 delegates out of the entire 60 that are to vote, with the other nine aspirants being given singular or no units in the allocation respectively.

“This led to the reported infighting and disagreement that crippled the entire exercise and made it impossible to go ahead with.”

They called on Alhaji Ali Dalori and the other stakeholders not to jettison or disregard “the need for due process in their failed attempt to impose a candidate on the party in Ibadan North.”

They said: “The concerned stakeholders group is thereby calling on the prompt and needed intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in restoring order and calling Hon Ali Dalori to attention, to allow for proper, fair and just processes in conducting the primaries to avoid catastrophic consequences for the party in this forthcoming by-election in Ibadan North.”
