Best for you PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) has officially announced that Liga 1 and Liga 2 have changed their names, on Monday (7/7/2025).
The name being promoted is Super League and Championship.
Super League is used to replace the name Liga 1 as the top tier of Indonesian League.
Meanwhile, League 2 is now called Championship.
This name change makes the most elite competition, or the highest tier of the Indonesian League, once again named Super League, which was last used in 2015.
Meanwhile, the name of the Indonesian League competition has changed from year to year.
The top league of professional football in Indonesia started from the 2008-09 season, initially established with the name Indonesia Super League (Liga Super Indonesia).
Before PSSI formed and organized the Indonesia Super League as the first professional football league in Indonesia, the name of the top-level competition in Indonesia was the Divisi Utama Liga Indonesia from the 1994-95 season until the 2007-08 season.
In the end, PSSI, which was then led by Nurdin Halid, formed PT Liga Indonesia (PT LI) as the operator of the professional Indonesian competition.
Indonesia Super League (2008)
In 2008, PSSI held the Indonesia Super League, formerly known as Djarum Indonesia Super League, with Djarum Super as the main sponsor to replace the Divisi Utama competition.
This competition is the first professional league in Indonesia with a full system or one region (point calculation from start to finish).
From 2008 to 2015, there were four teams that successfully won the Indonesia Super League.
The five teams are Persipura Jayapura (2008-09, 2010-11, 2013), Arema Indonesia (2009-10), Sriwijaya FC (2011-12), and Persib Bandung (2014).
Dualism Occurred (2013)
Indonesian football competition once experienced dualism in 2013.
At that time, Indonesia had two different top-tier football competitions, namely the Liga Primer Indonesia (LPI) and the Indonesian Super League (ISL).
In this competition, Indonesia also has two national teams, one consisting of players from the LPI and the other consisting of players from the ISL.
At the time of this dualism, LPI brought in new teams such as Solo FC and Tangerang Wolves.
However, as a result of this dualism, the league was suspended in 2015-16 because PSSI was frozen by FIFA.
Liga 1 (2017)
After FIFA lifted its punishment, PSSI revived the football competition in the country, which had been dormant.
At that time, PSSI held a competition with the official name Liga 1.
The format of the Liga 1 name has remained for quite a long time, starting from 2017 until this year, 2025.
Interestingly, the names of the Liga 1 competitions at that time were adjusted according to the main sponsors, starting from Go-Jek Traveloka Liga 1, Go-Jek Liga 1, Shopee Liga 1, and finally BRI Liga 1.
In its course, the Liga 1 competition was temporarily stopped by PSSI due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
During the name of Liga 1, Bali United (2019, 2021-22) and Persib Bandung (2023-24, 2024-25) became the teams with the most titles, each having two trophies.
In addition, other teams that also won the Liga 1 title are Bhayangkara FC (2017), Persija Jakarta (2018), and PSM Makassar (2022-23).
Indonesia Super League (2025)
The change of name from Liga 1 to Indonesia Super League has been recently decided.
PT LIB, as the league operator, officially announced the new name as BRI Super League.
The Indonesia Super League is scheduled to kick off on August 8, 2025.
This competition will be participated by 18 teams, consisting of 15 teams that remained from last season and three promotion teams from Liga 2.
Super League allows clubs to sign 11 foreign players without a quota from Asia or non-Asia.
However, only eight players can be included in the starting lineup (DSP).
For youth player regulations, next season each club must register five U-23 players, one of whom must play a minimum of 45 minutes or one half.
This young player regulation has changed from the previous season, where each club was required to play one U-22 player as a starter for at least 45 minutes or one half.
