U.S. B-2 Bombers on the Way to Guam
American B-2 stealth bombers have left Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri toward the Western Pacific base in Guam on Saturday, according to various reports.
The bombers, along with an escort of four Boeing KC-46 Pegasus refueling aircraft, will be joined by two additional refueling aircraft that took off from north of San Francisco, the reports said.
The Wall Street Journal noted the B-2s can carry the GBU-57 bunker buster , the 30,000-pound conventional weapon that defense analysts say can damage Iran's Fordow uranium-enrichment facility.
The news came after the New York Times reported that President Donald Trump suggested there was little else he could do to prevent further escalation of the conflict, despite ongoing negotiations in Europe.
Elsewhere, Yemeni Houthi militants, who are allied with Iran, warned they would target U.S. warships and commercial ships if the U.S. bombs Iran or similarly supports Israeli attacks. The group has attacked vessels in the Red Sea and fired some missiles at Israel, but have largely remained sidelined during the war.
Israel Strikes Nuclear Sites, Kills Officials
Israel announced Saturday that it had killed three more senior Iranian military leaders, further diminishing hopes for a quick end to the escalating conflict, even as officials from multiple Muslim-majority countries are expected to call for a ceasefire in Istanbul this weekend.
The news came along with Israel's continued successful strikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Israel struck yet another centrifuge production site, this time at the Isfahan nuclear facility. Although Iran has remained defiant about its nuclear ambitions, the repeated hits, including those in the Iranian cities of Tehran and Karaj, have put into question how much of its uranium stockpile and capabilities remain.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, stated in an update on Saturday on the agency's website that the centrifuge site, which produced the machines used to enrich uranium, "contained no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences."
The volley of overnight strikes nonetheless showed that neither country appears willing to rely on breakthroughs at the negotiating table alone.
Israel Acknowledges Damage from Iranian Strike
Iran's weaponry also damaged Israeli targets on Saturday. Israel said an Iranian drone strike caused structural damage to a building in northern Israel.
Although no injuries were reported, it is one of the first times that the Israeli military acknowledged successful Iranian strikes during the conflict. More often the country has said that its air-defense systems have been able to fend off most of Iran's attacks.
Nuclear Timeline Changes
U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has changed her stance on Iran's nuclear capabilities after being rebuked by the president.
Gabbard now says that Iran has the capability to produce nuclear weapons "within weeks to months," a reversal from her Congressional testimony in March in which she said the country was not building them.
Her new comments came after President Donald Trump said Gabbard had been "wrong," and that U.S. intelligence showed Iran was well-equipped enough to have a nuclear weapon "within months."
Experts had previously concluded that Iran had not resumed working on nuclear weapons after its suspended 2003 program, but with Iran's supply of enriched uranium at all-time highs, the IAEA had stated it was concerned about the country's stockpile.
