Trump Remains to Impose 32% Reciprocal Import Tariffs on Indonesia, Effective August

President of America Donald Trump announcing 14 countries that remain subject to Import tariff Minimum 10% and reciprocal tariff as of August 1. Indonesia is one of them.
Besides Indonesia, 13 other countries are Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Myanmar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Imported goods from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Tunisia to the United States will now be subject to a 25% tariff, according to a letter uploaded by Trump on the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by International CNBC, Tuesday (7/8).
South African and Bosnian goods will be subject to a 30% tariff, while those from Indonesia will be 32%.
Bangladesh and Serbia are both subject to 35% tariffs, while Cambodia and Thailand have 36%. Then, Laos and Myanmar have 40%.
The letter signed by Trump added that the US "may" consider adjusting new tariff levels, depending on the relationship between America and the country.
The letter was the first one sent before July 9, the day when the so-called reciprocal tariffs against dozens of countries were scheduled to take effect, which Trump announced in early April.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said more letters will be sent in the coming days.
Then on Monday (7/7) evening, Trump signed an executive order that delayed the tariff deadline from July 9 to August 1. "This decision is based on additional information and recommendations from various senior officials," it was quoted.
All letters state that the general tariff is separate from the additional sector-specific import duties on the main product categories.
"Items reshipped to avoid higher tariffs will still be subject to those tariffs," was quoted. In this case, reshipment appears to refer to the practice of moving goods to the destination country before the final shipment to the U.S., in order to avoid tariffs.
The letter emphasized that the new tariffs are needed to correct the continuous trade deficit of the United States with 14 countries. Trump regularly cited the trade deficit as evidence that the US is being taken advantage of by its trading partners.
Experts criticized this view. They consider the trade deficit basically bad and question whether America can or should try to close it.
Not all countries targeted by Trump have a large trade surplus with the US.
The U.S. trade deficit in goods was $68.5 billion with Japan, $66 billion with South Korea, and $579.3 million with Myanmar, according to the U.S. Trade Representative's Office.
AS is the main buyer of cars, engines, and electronic goods from Japan and South Korea. Kazakhstan exports crude oil and alloys to America, Malaysia sells electronic components to America, and South Africa mostly sends precious metals.
Main US imports from Laos include optical fibers, glass, and clothing, while the largest export category of Myanmar is mattresses and bedding.
Surat yang dikirimkan pada Senin (7/7) itu secara preemtif memperingatkan ke-14 negara tersebut agar tidak menanggapi tarif baru AS dengan mengenakan bea balasan terhadap impor barang-barang Amerika.
" If for any reason you decide to increase the Tariff, whatever amount you choose to increase it by will be added to the 25% we charge," said the letter.
After Trump imposed a three-month reciprocal tariff pause in April, his administration claimed it could achieve as many as 90 agreements in 90 days.
However, when the break was about to end, the US only announced a broad framework with Britain and Vietnam, as well as an initial agreement with China.
Trump said the Vietnam agreement imposes a 20% tariff on imports from the country to the US and a 40% "transshipping" fee, while the US will gain duty-free access to Vietnamese markets.
Trump's reciprocal tariff was canceled at the end of May by a federal district court, which ruled that he did not have legal authority to impose broad import duties based on the emergency powers law he cited at that time.
The Trump administration appealed to a federal court, which allowed the tariffs to remain in effect while the court reviewed the decision of the lower court.
