Menkes Says Hanta Virus Has Been Found in Several Provinces in Indonesia, This Is the Statement from North Sumatra's Health Office

Best for you, MEDAN - The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) of the Republic of Indonesia reported the discovery of Hanta virus infection cases in several provinces in Indonesia.

Like West Java Province, Special Autonomous Region Yogyakarta (DIY), East Nusa Tenggara and North Sulawesi.

However, so far the Minister of Health has not detailed the number of Hantavirus cases in Indonesia.

In response to this, Novita Saragih, Head of the Disease Control and Elimination Division (P2P) of the North Sumatra Health Office, stated that so far there have been no cases of hantavirus disease in North Sumatra.

As explained by Novita, Hantavirus is a zoonotic disease transmitted by rodents (rodent animals).

"No cases of Hanta virus have been found in North Sumatra. However, surveillance continues to be carried out at the provincial, district/city, and health center levels, as well as in collaboration with Promkes," he explained to Tribun Medan, Tuesday (8/7/2025).

It is stated that the cause of Hantavirus disease is a virus from the Orthohantavirus genus. Rats and mice are the main transmitters of this disease.

"Some types of Hanta virus are found in bats. To date, there have been no cases of Hanta virus in North Sumatra," he said.

New York officials have detailed the symptoms and characteristics of people infected with the Hanta virus.

It is stated that there are two main types of diseases caused by the Hantavirus, namely Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS).

"The symptoms experienced by a person depend on the clinical manifestations that occur. If HPS symptoms such as fever, body aches, malaise (fatigue), cough, and shortness of breath appear," he said.

As for HFRS symptoms, Novi said fever, headache, body aches, malaise (weakness), and jaundice (yellowing of the body)

"Until now, in Indonesia, only Hanta cases with clinical manifestations of HFRS have been found," he said.

New police reveal initial handling of patients if Hanta virus cases are found in North Sumatra

"Management of patients is focused on supportive measures to alleviate symptoms and prevent complications, as there is no specific treatment for Hanta Virus infection," he said.

It is stated that they have also coordinated with all relevant public health centers regarding education on the handling of Hantavirus.

"Implementation of surveillance at the provincial, district/city, and community health center levels is also carried out by providing understanding to health workers regarding the prevention and control of Hanta Virus," he explained.

Prevention of Hanta Virus disease is mainly done by Novi through rodent control and preventing contact with rodent urine, feces, saliva, and nesting areas.

"Preventing contact with rodent urine, feces, and saliva can be done by applying clean and healthy behavior, maintaining house cleanliness and places that have not been used for a long time, especially in basements, attics, warehouses, and storage areas to prevent rodents from entering the house," he said.

The new man suggested placing mouse traps around the house.

"Stay away from rodents, live or dead, manage waste properly, and place mouse traps around your home or workplace to reduce the rodent population," he said.

This new virus is still not well understood. However, so far the death rate related to this virus has reached 5-15 percent.

"The global death rate varies depending on the type of virus strain, with an average case fatality rate (CFR) of 5-15 percent," he explained.
