Then, in March 2020, Erwin Nasution, the son of the former Director of PT Perkebunan Nusantara (Persero) IV, decided to enter the political world by joining PDIP.
At that time, Bobby had been married to Kahiyang Ayu, the daughter of Indonesia's 7th president Joko Widodo.
After registering with PDIP, Bobby then went to several parties to obtain coalition support for the Medan election.

Bobby said that his decision to run in the Medan mayoral election was to build his hometown.
"We want to do something, to do something in the region where we were born, there, I think it's not a dynasty," he said.
In the election, Bobby-Aulia won with 393,327 votes, while Akhyar and Salman received 342,580 votes.
2024 North Sumatra Election
Not satisfied with the position of Mayor of Medan, Booby then declared his candidacy for Governor of North Sumatra. This time, he is running together with a Golkar faction member, also the Regent of Asahan, Surya.
Bobby once again faces the incumbent, this time his opponents are Edy Rahmayadi and Hasan Basri.
However, before obtaining the ticket in the North Sumatra Regional Election, Bobby was once proposed to be expelled by the Medan City PDIP Branch in November 2023.
The proposal for dismissal was made because Bobby did not support the presidential candidate pair, who were endorsed by PDIP in the 2024 presidential election.
PDIP at that time supported Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD.
At that time, Bobby was considered defiant for supporting Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, his brother-in-law.
