For the elderly, especially those aged 60 years and above, strength training has proven to bring significant benefits to the body and quality of life. Even for those who start it later in life, the result remains significant .

Study: Benefits of Strength Training for the Elderly

A study published in International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that elderly individuals who participated in a 12-week strength training program experienced:

• Increase in muscle mass
• Better physical strength
• Improved body functions , even after six months without exercising

"If left unchecked, sarcopenia can greatly affect the independence and quality of life of the elderly. However, strength exercises can slow down or even reverse this process," explained Linkul.

5 Safe and Effective Strength Exercises for Seniors

The following is five simple exercises which can be done at home, without heavy equipment yet still provides maximum benefits:

1. Bodyweight Squat

• Training : Thigh and buttock muscles (gluteus)
• How Stand upright, feet shoulder-width apart. Slowly bend your knees as if sitting in a chair, then stand back up.
• Repetition : 10–15 times

2. Wall Push-Up

• Training : Chest, arm, and shoulder muscles
• How to Stand facing a wall, place your hands shoulder-width apart. Push your body towards the wall, then return to the starting position.
• Repetition : 10–15 times

3. Balance Exercise: Standing on One Leg

• Training : Core muscles and body balance
• Dear: Try standing on one leg for 10–30 seconds, then switch to the other leg.
• Recipe: Repeat 2–3 sets per leg

4. Bicep Curl with Water Bottle

• Training : Upper arm muscle
• Dear: Use a 600–1000 ml water bottle. Lift the bottle from below toward your shoulder, then slowly lower it down.
• Repetition : 10–12 times per hand

5. Chair Stand

• Training : Legs and body posture
• How to : Sit on an armless chair, stand up without using your hands, then sit back down.
